"Lim" button on the steering wheel

Can anyone please explain what the "Lim" button function is? I understand that it relates to the speed limit for the cruise control, but it seems that it can be engaged even when not using the cruise control.

I caught it accidently a few weeks ago when turning into a side road, which was off of a relatively fast A road. It dropped the speed down considerably - I assume it limited the car to the speed that I was doing at the time I made the turn. I had to wait for a safe place to pull over to work out what I had done. Thanks.

Cheers ...

Its your upper speedlimit, so you accidently wont get caught in a speed cam. Works fine in speedlimit hells like Norway :-)

Just press it again and you can go as fast as you like :-)

Lim function.

Here if you push the gas hard down it overrides the Lim function and you can pull away for emergencies.

The only Lim button we have in North America is the big black pedal on the floor. Oh, and we call it the brake

Am also puzzled by the LIM button. Do not understand how it works or what it is for. Am sat with the manual in front of me and still dont get it. It doesn't even show a LIM button. In it's place is SET.

It seems to be some variations, may be country spesific. If you push the button when driving at the speed you want it wil be set to that speed. Then it will not go faster unless you press very hard on the gas or press the button again.
This to avoid the unvolentary speed kreep that's very easy to get in our cars..

I use the adaptive cruise control instead for this purpose, so don't find it too useful.

I use ACC all the time, but driving around town it is not practical, however the LiM function is. As previously mentioned the best use for LIM is to help prevent speeding tickets. Especially in unknown areas. Very useful.

Gave it a try today and understand now. It's not something I can imagine using myself. I tend to use the cruise on all non-urban journeys and I let that handle the speed for me.

What I think would be useful is if you can use them together. e.g. Cruise is set to 70, occassionally you want to increase a little for passing and so you have the limit set at 80. I would definately use that.

it can be useful if you remeber to activate it knowingly - when i first got the car I accidentally pressed the button and wondered for 5 minutes why the car would not accelerate and if the car had gone wrong already!

Driven through M42 in B'ham today with variable speed cameras active at 50. Set LIM at 50 as traffic was up and down between 40 and 50 so couldn't really use cruise (my preferred option) it worked well as I could vary speed to keep up with traffic, but with the confidence I would go above 50 when a gap opened up and get the dreaded double flash in my rear view mirror.

Yes, it is a big brother is watching you, let's behave button.
And it works fine, would be a good thing to have speedtrap pois to operate the function though!

Wow! I drove the M42 in Birmingham today too :-)

I used ACC. If I didn't have it I would definately have used LIM.

Me too! and every day. It's my route to work. I will start waving at fellow F10/F11 drivers on the M42 from now on in case it's one of you. If it's not someone on this forum, they'll just think I am a nutter.

Firstly, thanks to all for replies re. clarity of this button.

Sunny - this is precisely what happened for me - I caught the button by accident and I just couldn't figure what had happened. It was lucky that it was late in the evening when I did this and there was hardly any traffic around, as my speed dropped considerably, for the type of road that I was driving on. I waited for a point to pull over and realized what had happened.

I strongly urge anyone who has this Lim feature to be aware of it and that it can potentially drop your speed to very low, by simply catching the button - in error.

I have not - it's never clean enough

Anyway, no one wants to see my sedate looking Touring, dark blue with only 17" wheels. No where near sexy enough for most of you guys.

I think of it as Refined.

LOL

What a get-out! No one believes the brochure anyway, so your pic's are still required
