2011-2013 550i Owners...Opinions and Input Needed
Ladies / Gents
I am about a week out from completing the purchase on a 77K 12 550i M Package and would like to hear from the actual owners. I understand many dislike the N63 engine. I am close to freaked out and purchasing a new Prius. I have only owned BMW's and in fact driving my 03 530i Sport at 220K mi as we speak. As I am moving on away from pretending to be a millennial, I would prefer not to work on these myself any longer. I have always had the faster of the BMW's (notwithstanding the e39) and attracted to speed. BUT again, I don't want to pay the $230 monthly to cover bumper to bumper and will probably look at other options. With that said, I need the previous or existing owners to chime in. Are all these things bad? Is it specific issues? Can I expect to pay for repairs with my new born children? |

I had an E39 540 manual. Best car I have ever owned.
My 2013 550 has been terrifically solid. I had the CCP done, and really haven't had any issues (I shudder typing such a bad karma inducing claim). This car doesn't drive like the E39, but few cars do. I test drove several 535s and it just didn't do it for me. The power curve is delightful. The ride is nice. The tech is good. BMW no longer makes a stick for this car, so this will be my last one. Likely get some sort of Porsche. But at 60,000 miles, I have no real complaints. I will say this. I bought my first extended warranty for this car up through 100,000. Never done this before, but didn't want to get hit hard. warranty wasn't very expensive. Good luck! Bill

OP, The problem is your wife won't be able to bare children fast enough to keep up with paying for the repairs. You're going to need more mamas, get'em going at least two at a time.
As I've said before, IMO insane to own one of these outside of a comprehensive warranty. Even Route 66 Main Street Warranty is not enough to keep your kids at home...there will be a ton of expensive stuff not covered under that program. If I were to do it over again, I'd buy a 2014 550i (or earlier if budget doesn't allow) with no more than 49k miles that's still covered under the factory warranty with at least time for the dealer to do one more final inspection and have every single oil leak and problem taken care of. Check it again for leaks right before 49,999k miles and take in again if necassary. Then, right before 50k miles, I'd buy the Route 66 EASY STREET Warranty and sleep in peace every night until 95k miles. Then at 95k miles I'd SELL IT FAST AS HELL and advertise that it's still under warranty. Last edited by EZgo; 01-15-2018 at 09:05 AM.. |

2011 550i. Bought the car with 50k miles. Have put 28kmiles on it so far with no issues after CCP was done as well as HpFP replaced(made big difference in power), all free. I have no warranties.
Have many mods and the car runs smooth as butter. Active autoworke Catless downpipes, intake and BMS Stage 1 tune. Very fun to drive. Power is on tap. Was looking at 535 and glad I got this. Don't see many on the road, might be good or bad thing lol. |

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with PenFed or Route66!
Route 66 has a warranty for higher mileage cars up to 8 years old for an additional 36k miles. I'd slap the regular Easy Street warranty on to take it to 100k, then get this one: Main Street Protection For vehicles 8 model years old or newer with 75,001 - 125,000 miles on the odometer. Coverage 36 months or 36,000 miles from time of purchase; whichever is first. https://www.penfed.org/auto/extended-warranty So you can basically take your 550i to 136k miles for $6k. Not too shabby for an N63 car.

what items are likely to fail that you don't think will be covered by Rt66 warranty? seals? hoses? breather tubes? gaskets? |

Water pump go out? Better hope it's the main and not the aux water pump because they only cover the main one. Thermostat, nope...there goes another $700. Have a leaky hose/pipe/tube in a hard-to-get-to place, another $600-$1000. I could go on and on. I paid thousands for the Main Street warranty and am still out thousands for out-of-pocket repairs post-manufacturer warranty of only a year so. Main Street would a fairly comprehensive warranty if we're talking about a car built a few decades ago with much simpler systems. IMO, stay away from the 550i if you can't get more comprehensive coverage than Main Street. |

What is the car going for and what is the warranty on it? My 2012 550i is at 75k and have had no issues since I bought her at 33k miles 4 years ago. She has been super solid, outside of the starter and half the injectors being replaced I haven?t had a single issue. Both of those were known problems by BMW and they corrected at no cost through their CCP. Make sure CCP was done on the vehicle and that you check it for clean records and you should be in good shape. Warranty is def good for piece of mind.
Ps my 550 is up for sale here if you haven?t already pulled the trigger! Good luck! |
