Extended climate retro.... done

Just in case anyone else is interested. I've bought the extended climate unit and fitted it to my pre lci 520d. It worked straight away but the heated seats didn't. I took it to be coded and 20 mins later all is working.

I got the unit for £50 from eBay and the coding cost me £70. That included setting up my led reverse lights too.

I personally think that's a bargain.

Quick pic...

Hi,
Excuse my ignorance but are you saying this is a direct drop in?!

If so, would you happen to know if this would work with an LCI 520d?..

Thanks

It is a direct drop in for an lci, just needs coding on the pre lci.

What advantages does it have over the standard a/c control?

From the brochure.....Fully automatic temperature control with independent temperature control, air distribution and air volume control for driver and front passenger. Two vents in the rear console. Including Automatic Air Recirculation ((AUC), solar sensor and fogging sensor and auxiliary ventilation.

It also has residual heat functionality and you can sync both sides.

Swapping the control panel won't give you the solar and fogging sensors, but the rest is worth having for a relatively small cost.

Will start scouring eBay now!

Is it difficult to fit the solar and fogging sensors? and/or is it beneficial?

I have the extended climate and I have never used those features during winter or summer, so I don't think its worth worrying about. (Unless these are automatic features that work in the background in which case ignore me!)

Unfortunately they are automatic features that work in the background. Until you've used both systems its difficult to appreciate just how much the solar sensor particularly is of benefit. When I drive a 520d I am often frustrated by the climate controls inability to control for the effects of solar gain - whereas in cars with extended climate this is never an issue and the cabin is always comfortable and never too hot.

Fogging sensor seems less of a must-have, though.

I remain completely confused why BMW did this to the 520d. It can't have been to sell more options as I don't think I've ever seen a 520d where somebody has paid for the extended climate.

I think it's the natural progression of having to offer higher spec in base models. In the olden days base car gets no-AC, no leather, no satnav. Premium model gets AC, leather, satnav so it's clearly the premium model. Nowadays the base model gets AC, leather, satnav so the Premium model needs Extended-AC, Nappa-leather, Pro-satnav etc.

Every single E39 SE had dual zone climate control with a solar sensor.

I assume (don't know) that the e39 only had 1 type of AC unit so BMW UK didn't have any choice once they decided that all models needed AC. Nowadays they have 3 choices so they can be more granular and make each of the 3 types standard on different models.

Plus, as the 520d outsells all the other variants put together, several times over, it's the obvious target for penny-shaving.

I am not too sure what all these different SC systems offer if I am honest. My GF took me shopping to Bicester village in her 1 series last weekend. Not sure there was any difference between her "bog standard" AC and the automatic climate control that I have on my 535D... It certainly felt comfortable enough.

The difference between AC and ACC is significant. AC simply has the ability to generate cold air and it is up to you how cold you make it and how much you feed into the cabin. ACC allows you to set a temperature and the system adjusts things automatically to keep the cabin at that temperature.
