Impossible question
My 530D SE is coming up to 3 years old, 54,000 miles (I do about 18-20,000 pa), has given me no trouble and is as fast and smooth as ever. It has been BMW serviced in accordance with CBS, and the bodywork is an excellent condition.
The impossible question is: How many more years might it perform well with average luck before I'd be at risk of major mechanical expenditure? There are far too many variables, I know, but I'd be interested in forum members' opinions. |

I like impossible questions. I do a similar mileage to you and service it according to CBS. I've run 5 series diesels for a good few years now. I typically change them at between 80-100k, 5 to 6 years use. Since 2008, the only non planned spend was a headlight bulb. Maybe just lucky...

not a F10 but my previous E39 I had for 10 years and the only unscheduled expenditure right at the end was a failed alternator.
mileage to be fair was only 55000. |

You should easily be able to add another 100K to that mileage or are you like my next door neighbours?
They change their car every time it needs a wash otherwise they would not be able to keep up with the Jones at the Golf Club. |

So for me the question would be; should you extend the warranty (or take out a 3rd party warranty), or put the warranty money in a safe place each year, saving up for the major failure that may or may not come?

My car is 6 years old this December, registered Dec 2010 and 92k miles
So far the only failure has been a single rear spring. Preventative maintenance I have carried out includes: - diff oil change - gear box oil change and sump/filter replacement. I've also move the oil changes to 9k, from 18k, fuel and engine air filters will be advanced to 18k from 36k in due course. It has also received front and rear discs and pads between 72k and 88k. |
