18-inch wheels on a 550i GT with sport package?

Any help would be appreciated. My friend has a rear-wheel-drive 550i GT with sport package on the factory 20s, and he needs to buy winter tires. He mostly uses the car around town and our roads don't get plowed like they should, so he'd be a lot better off with studless ice and snow tires like the Blizzak WS-60. Unfortunately, such tires only come in 18-inch and smaller sizes. I've seen posts on here alluding to being able to use 18s on the 550i GT, but Tire Rack just told me 18s won't clear the calipers. Has anyone actually put 18s on a 550i GT with sport package?

I suspect that information is correct. I have a 550GT with sport package and factory 20s and I purchased a set of 19s with Blizzaks from Tire Rack. Once fitted there was not a whole bunch of clearance between the rim and caliper.

I don't think the brakes are different with the sport package...at least the spec page on the BMW website doesn't say that it differs between the stock vehicle and the sport optioned one. So, depending on the wheel (and an aftermarket 18" wheel might NOT fit, whereas an 18" BMW wheel might), you could probably install 18" wheels. You might look for someone with takeoff 18", and get a good deal on a set of wheels and TPMS. I don't have a sport option, but 18" aftermarket wheels fit fine.

The stock wheel on the 550 is the same as on the 535, although I was wrong about the brakes, they're bigger on the V-8 verses the I-6, but the stock wheels are the same 18x8. Still can't find a difference in brakes on the sport model.
