ID N63 Intake Development - Tease.

I'll just leave this here for you guys...

Both sides should be on this week for you guys to tease on.

Oh, and it sounds... insane. First time I ever heard a growl and a blow off from this engine.

Edit: 4/23/14

Here's the video, keep in mind that only 1 side is installed (pass side).

Cool. Are you doing before and after air intake temp comparison? That is pretty close to an awfully hot part of the engine.

Amount of flow to engine vs temperature this has been tested on 335i cars and this kind of set up still made more power. Good job Igor. I'm in for second set.

N54 turbos aren't on top of the engine. Also, it only made more power for those with aggressive tunes/mods - those with no or mild tunes saw no gains.

Applying this to the n63 is just theory though - will be interested to see data backing up gains, glad someone's taking the initiative to do this.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. Sergey and I are excited. Even if the IATs increase, this may be offset by better flow and volume considering all turbo cars are intercooled.

At the end of the day, if this yields no power gains (unlikely) and only adds intake and turbo spool sound, I'm game....

We all know I run very aggressive but gold wrapping should help reflect heat. Or engines tend to run better in warmer weather

So given the placement of the cone filter, I'm guessing the stock piping coming from the kidney grills (seen outside of the two strut bars pictured) are no longer used?

Absolutely provide temperatures and air flows, as well as any HP/TQ comparisons to stock. I already did a base line on my 550xi, and I'll be doing another base line right before the new intake just to make sure i'm receiving consistent data.

Like badblack stated, our cars don't rely on intake air temperature as much. Heat soak shouldn't be an issue... and based on the 6 baseline runs I already did, the car seemed to put down higher numbers as the temperature went up, the minute the car cooled down and we did another run, the numbers slightly decreased.

At the end of the day, this has to yield some gains, the factory air boxes are so restrictive that doing any sort of improvement will deliver some sort of gain one way or another. Worst case... if we don't "feel" an improvement, we'll at least "hear" it lol. This thing sounded beasty just with one intake in when I took it for a spin around the block.

It will still be used to help divert some air to the cone filter, I'll design a diversion shield that will smoothly help divert any air coming from the piping right into the filter at WOT. Otherwise, when you're coasting... any air pushed into through that piping will simply escape once it reaches the filter unless its being sucked in.

I can see that. If you were to have fabricated it to go straight from the intake pipes by the strut bars directly to the turbo-chargers, I think the installation would have been exponentially complicated to get the factory tubing off and the aftermarket intake connected.

Also, I'm guessing the OEM plastic cover will no longer fit after installing this intake?

I live 5-10mins from you guys. I would be down for a set

On a side note the filters are located mightly close to the HOTTEST part of the engine bay. I also wonder if there is any chance of the heat doing some damage to the hood without the engine cover/oem intake in place allowing the radiating heat to just travel directly upwards.

Or deforming the actual filter element.

We can try gold foil wrap around the area to deflect the heat.

I was thinking same thing. Especially if you have aftermarket DP's.
No sheild even more heat.

Also, dyno numbers will almost for sure look good, but I wonder how it will perform with hood down at full op temp.

Hotter air = ecu adjusting and making it slower.

dyno will have hood open, and a fan blowing air.

I dont know just want to make sure this project goes smooth for you.

I know it will see some great numbers on dyno, just by the look of it yyou can just tell. Im just worried about daily driving performance.

Nevertheless, your the man.. and I thank you for contributing to this community.
