Auto H
Anyone with an Automatic transmission use the Auto H feature? I haven't used mine yet, but not sure what the benefit is for an auto transmission when your foot is always on the brake when stopped.
Anyone use it? Opinions? |

It let's you sit with the brakes on and your foot off the brake pedal. Nice in stop and go traffic with more stop than go. When AUTO H is engaged and you come to a full stop, just lift your foot off the brake pedal. The brakes and the brake lights will stay on until you hit the accelerator.

I ignored mine for several months but now use it all the time. As AVIMAX stated with it engaged, you don't need to hold your foot on the brake and can have it ready at the accelerator. Great for quick getaways at the lights (or for those like me with a 520d its more like a regular getaway once you wait for the turbo lag).
I found that the real benefit though is in stop start traffic. Very handy. |

Interesting note on Auto Hold... my sales person told me it automatically locks the brakes at "full pressure" in the event of a rear end collision while you're sitting still. This is not the case. It only "remembers" the last brake pressure setting you applied. So if you come to a stop at a slow crawl with Auto Hold engaged, the car will actually tend to creep forward a little if you're not careful.
Obviously, you can remedy this by pushing harder on the brake pedal after you've come to a complete stop. Just a heads up for ya'll. I also think it's a great feature. Just a PITA if you forget it's on and you try maneuvering into a parking spot. Then it can make you look like an idiot |

I use it all the time, probably the first thing I turn on after fastening the seat belt. It allows me to relax my feet in stop and go traffic and I don't have to worry about the car creeping back or forth on slopes.

I drove a Lincoln town car rental once that had this -it seemed more 'hydraulic' and real, although i don't know if it was pressure sensitive, however it seemed to work better than the one on my f10, which seems more abrupt or 'electronic', although it may just be my brakes/rotors/Brakefluid are a little messed up.
Had it release on insufficient braking pressure, but the car re-locks it once it senses the car is rolling.. |

Never had mine creep either. Indeed if I am crawling to a stop (going real real slow) sometimes it applies the brakes quite hard a second before I was really ready.

Hmmm... I'll play with it again next time I drive the car. I can't imagine it's "broken". And I know what I saw! That's exactly the reason I even remembered it!

As others said, help you to release your brake foot during traffic.
But I think that on slopes it's the best to use or sometimes when you are getting in or out a car park |

Is that something that could be solved through a system update, or is that strictly a physical issue? Half a foot is a lot.

Don't know whether it's standard across the entire model range, but my 535d came with it. To activate it you press the button immediately behind the handbrake switch.

I agree when comming to a stop or just crawling along it can apply the brakes hard - to complaints for the passengers as to why i have to brake so hard! - on my car it is also sensitive to touching the accelarator - the slightest touch and AH is off and the car is creeping forward.
