I lived in Europe before. There was an E60 LCI 540i model with a V8 naturally aspirated, 225kW (306 HP). Engine N62 TU. I liked how natural that engine was.

At speeds of 100 mph+, it was a monster. It seemed like there's no limit.

But it didn't have enough low end torque for city driving. In low speed accelerations it felt sluggish compared to a 150kW E46 diesel.
There was never an E60 LCI 540i. What you are reffering to was the E39 LCI 540i. The E60 debuted with 545i and then had an LCI 550i.

But I know the E39 540i, I drove it. What a car

Dude I had that car for 2 years. It does exist. BMW has labeled E60 LCI 2007 onwards with N62TU engine as "540i" in Europe and other regions. 550i LCI was even more powerful. In US there was a different offering and labeling. Check out realoem.com, select Europe.

But it's offtopic for this thread.

Anyone else here with 535d order (European 530d for that matter)? Share your config!

Frankly, this is like discovering extra-terrestrial life for me I had NO IDEA that model existed. Not only that, but I even couldn't believe when the guy said it, because it doesn't make any sense, period. Why offer an old 4.4 V8 in the LCI, with the same power/torque as the 3-liter turbo, but worse fuel economy? Anyway, I learned something new today. Thanks

European LCI 530i was a 3-liter L6, 200kW, naturally aspirated, no turbo
European LCI 540i was a 4-liter V8, NA, 225kW
European LCI 550i was a 4.8-liter V8, NA, 270kW

Note there was no L6 (turbocharged) 535i in Europe. Who knows why, maybe because of the recalls and problems with the hydraulic pump?

Guys diesel is not about the price/ gallon - Its abt MPG ... you can get over 40 some mpg on highway, try that with a gas turbo charged engine keeping weight more or less the same ... higher compression ratio's and natural combustion (no spark plugs) cause these sluggish machines to deliver more miles to a gallon.. now dont change the oil 11k miles or u'll toast that engine at 100k

Well the price of diesel in US and the car inflated price, pretty much negates that fuel economy advantage. BMW is setting this car up for failure.

In Europe the 530d is EUR 3,350 CHEAPER than the 535i. In US the diesel is $1,500 MORE EXPENSIVE than the 535i. How does this makes sense, I don't know. I mean, when you want to penetrate a market with a new engine or a new model, you go cheaper not more expensive. It's just stupid IMO.

On top of this, it's the price of diesel in US which in average is 11% more expensive than gas.

So, unless you REALLY want your diesel or you plan to drive 20k+ miles a year, it makes no sense to buy the 535d over the 535i. There. I said it

If you look at it from a pure spreadsheet perspective, you may be right. There might not be a compelling financial argument unless you drive a lot of miles.

However, the ability to go 600 miles on a tank, i.e. fewer fill ups, has its appeal.

So, does anybody know if the Euro 535d is simply a boosted version of the 535d offered in the US? Are there other major engine changes?

EDIT: Never mind. The US version is the 530d the rest of the world gets. Single turbo. Thread below explains the differences. I guess the question is, how tuneable is the 530d?

I had 335D for three years and it was a wonderful car. No major problems except few emission software updates, and recall for EGR. Price of the diesel was more expensive for most of the time but $4500.00 eco credit helped big time. My average millage was around 26MPG (I got up to 40MPG on log trips) because majority of the driving was in the city. Few months a go I ordered 2014 535D, but when I found out that July and August build cars had no 704 M Sport suspension(very important to me) and the eco credit was not available I canceled my order and got 2013 535 M Sport. IMO unless you are driving long distance on the highway every day diesel in not as economical as you would expect (at least 6 cylinders one). Plus 535d cost around 2 grand more then 535I. Again its personal preference and I’m not trying to justify my 535I purchase. LOL!

Diesel is not (just) about saving money. Most people will probably not save much, if anything by buying a diesel.

The engine characteristics are just completely different. Some prefer it, some not. I buy diesel for daily driving because I prefer how the engine responds.

Excellent idea in creating this thread. Did you note that Audi launched an A6 diesel for 2014 in the US too? Un friggin' believable. In case anyone doubted if corporate espionage exists.

Yes, but unfortunately I do lease only and Audi residuals are really bad. Same total value, same conditions, but the lease will be up to $100 more / month.

5 Series is much more fun to drive than the A6.

Yes, diesel has more torque and horsepower and for those of you that appreciate this I salute you. For me, that would mean more speeding tickets. The 535 was more power than I needed so I'm waiting for delivery of a 528x drive. Also, when I priced out the 535d it had a price tag of +$12,000.

The 528 will get close to the MPG of the 535d and this was a major selling point for me. Have the 4 banger X3 and find it to have more than enough horses and torque.

Great choice folks!

Hey diesel owners, don't apologize for your choice. You sound like car enthusiasts so power/ torque is important for you. And you're helping our environment by filling up less often. Huge win/win. Some of you probably considered the 550, but I think you made an excellent choice!

LOL

You don't have as many speed traps in SoCal as we do in NJ. I've lived on the left coast so I know by personal experience.

"Homie"- I love that. That's a first for me. I'm the waspiest guy you'd ever meet.

That's alright. When we open the door to that BMW dealership, we're all equal. Like entering a church/temple
