Is there a way to auto-unlock doors?

Can you set the iDrive to unlock the doors when you either put the car in park or shut the car off? I hate that I have to use the key fob to get in the back door after I park to grab stuff.

Short answer - no. Long answer - yes. You can code it yourself (look here)

Actually, I am very confused with this function. Sometimes I press the start/stop button when I reach my destination and the doors unlock, whereas other times nothing happens. I am not sure if there is something that I need to do so the doors unlock, but I always follow the same procedure (car in 'park', handbrake on, foot on the brake) but the result varies. Any ideas?

This was my thought also, and it's no joke...

You do realize that the unlock button is on the dash just under the hazards, right?

hi folks,

I believe the original question was to do with what trigger the auto unlocking of the doors, is it Park button on the gear shift or the Start stop button for the engine or ......
I have my one set as unlocking only the driver’s door, when with my kids in back I often reach for the button on the Dashboard knowing that the auto will only unlock my door, but often I end up locking my door just opened via the auto instead of unlocking the other doors. I know this is down to pressing the dashboard button to early. Hence I need to know the what exactly trigger the auto opening so I don’t end-up cancelling what the car did for me on the 1st place.
i be checking this on my next parking

Exactly. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY FRIENDS complains about this when they get out of the car... then again when they have to double pull the handle. There must be a way to auto unlock when you either put the car in park or shut it off. And yes, it annoys the crap out of me too

quick question: are you manually locking the car when driving off?
The reason I ask: I have mine set to auto-lock/unlock and this works fine, with one exception: when I manually lock the doors using the center console button (before the auto-lock does, or after manually unlocking and locking again), it will not auto-unlock...

Maybe this helps?

p.s.: since I'm driving a stick shift, can't comment on when exactly it's supposed to unlock with an auto gear box..

Nope. In fact, I find the lock/unlock button so inconveniently located I rarely use it. I feel like I'm always fubmling for the eky fob when I get out of the car just to get the back door open.

There is no auto unlock function in the US. My Audi use to unlock the doors when I put it in park, the BMW doesnt have that option.

Back to my first post in the thread...it can be done via coding. It can be set to unlock with the first push of the start/stop button when shutting the engine off.

Uh... when I put my hand on any door handle, the car automatically unlocks it...
I can also lock the car by touching any handle...

Are you all missing the Comfort Access option? Maybe you should consider it next time, theres a reason why its called Comfort Access and you guys are complaining about missing comfort/convenience.

I do not have comfort access. But that isn't the issue. The car should unlock when placed in park, IMHO.

I will be recoding the car after the holiday weekend.

I dont want it to unlock when I go into park, that is a undue security risk...

I agree that placing the vehicle in park and having the doors automatically unlock can place your safety in jeopardy as we have a tendancy to put the car in park when stopping through habit before we assess our surroundings. The code fix as found by the coders does not unlock when you go into park, it unlocks when you shut the engine off. This minor variance in behavior is key in that it allows you time to assess the viability of exiting your vehicle safely before shutting it off yet place the vehicle safely in park. If you are concerned about unlocking the car at that time then leave it running or better still, put it back in gear and exit the area all while your doors remain locked.

Good question, I will try this out and report back. What I do find peculiar is that I do have the car in auto lock/unlock mode, but the pattern of unlocking is very bizzare. Sometimes the car unlocks when I press the start/stop button after a drive, and sometimes it does not. I have tried all sort of combinations (e.g. press the start/stop button with foot on the brake or not, etc) and there is no clear pattern. Maybe it is what you say and the manual locking overrides the unlock command once I park.
