Creak noise, friction form seatbelt in B pillar - is this mormal?
ALl, Have posted about this before but before I mention this to a dealer, wondering if this is normal.
Where the seatbelt comes out of the B-pillar, there appears to be some friction whereby the seatbelt does not come out smoothly. It feels like it 'sticks' and when it releases, it makes a creaking noise which iw right next to you ear. The belt moves alot if you are in traffic and also even as I'm breathing as my chest pulls the belt out ever so lightly and and goes back in again. The passengers belt a;lso feels the same. The rear belts however do feel smooth. Is this normal? Am I the only person with this issue. the belt is obviously functioning correctly but ist just not smooth as it moves in an out, its subtle becuaseif you pull the belt out as if yo were putting it on, you wouldn't notice it. |

Sounds like you have a problem, but trying to convey that to a dealer to get some work done is a bit tricky.

I have this same issue too. I hear it as a slight click every few seconds or so. It's not very loud, but as you say it's annoying because it's right next to my ear. Even with radio or music on at a reasonable volume, I still hear it and find it very irritating. It's certainly something I'll be mentioning to my dealer, just not sure when that will be.

Your noise is not normal. Have the dealer replace the seat belt mechanism.
As for the movement it should move with you. It is only in an accident that it tightens and retracts to hold you in place. Believe me, I know from my retired E60 high speed accident.

thanks I'll get them to have a look.
It might seem trivial but as the car is so quiet inside I notice it all the time and find I have to drive with music on now to cover it up. Will take the opportunity to sit in another car at the dealers just to make sure as well. |

an update, had the car in the dealers for a hopeful resolution to this.
Despite oiling the internals of the seatbelt mechanism this has not fixed the issue. the next step the dealer will take is to order the part hightlighted in the original photo and replace. Total cost of the part is £27.50 (although I'm not paying) I also sat in a model 2012 5 series that happened to be in their possession and this did not have the issue so hopefully replacing this part will sort that out. Although this is a 5 forum, I'll comment on the new X1 2.0d auto 4 wheel drive I had whilst they worked on the car. I thought this was quite cheap in comparison on the inside and certainly didn't have the quality feel that there is in the 5 series. The 2 litre engine whilst adequate , I was not impressed with it and and idle and starting to pull away really sounded like a tractor. Once on the move its was ok but it makes me very glad I ordered the straight six diesel instead for my 5, its streets ahead. Steering on the X1 was heavier , a feel I personally prefer . I've got used to the F10's streering but do miss the communiction you got from the E39, that was nigh on perfect IMHO. Also the X1 drifted off to the left like my F10 does and appears affected by camber just the same as the F10. Certianly glad to get back in my F10 at the end of the day. hopefully an update on this issue in the near future. There are no spare part in germany at present so it may take some time to get ordered and fitted. |

An update, I had the part where the seatbelt comes out of the B-Pillar replaced and this has solved the issue. If I nitpick , you can still hear the friction but its so quiet now, its really not an issue and I am quite happy to drive along now without the radio on.
May be its just me but I always feel that I'km being over fussy about these sort of things, my dealership were ok about it and had no hesitation to undertake the work. (I guess they make some money out of it from BMW) So worth bearing in mind in case you encounter the same issue. |

At least you can take comfort in knowing that its not the car itself which is squeaking. I've had those.
Everything I've read indicates the f10 has one of the most rigid bodies of any sedan ever made. Might be the most rigid. Pretty durn impressive! |

Glad you got it fixed. Otherwise, it will slowly drive you mad.
