Purchasing product from owner on here

How do you guys go about buying products from the owner for sale section..

The user wanted me to gift him money for a product I am purchasing ... How would I assure everything goes smooth?

I often have people gift me money so that neither of us incur fees, when they buy from me.

However, from my understanding you have less of a leg to stand on with paypal vs if you send money for gifts/services (where paypal charges you fees) and along with the payment document what you are sending the payment for.

this way if you get shafted from the seller (unfortunate that anyone would do that) then you can open a case with paypal.

as the buyer at that point you also want to be responsible for the fees (which are usually 3%)

Right I know that this way we won't incur fees but I have no tangible document that I am purchasing something is the problem.

If you don't want to "gift" and still want to have protection, pay the paypal fees yourself.

I always give buyer the option.

Many of us have been around long enough to know it better.

Luckily it has been very rare that a member screws another member on the forums (in my experience), the forums tend to be a tight community and fairly self policing - we know if someone screws another member that they will never be able to sell/buy anything on the forums again. Has it happened? Yes, but after being on the 5 series BMW forums for 9 years now, I have seen it happen maybe twice.

My rule of thumb is if it's a large ticket item, like over $300, I'll pay the fee or maybe 1/2 the fee. Anything less, I feel comfortable sending payment as 'gift'. If I get scammed for $300 or less, it's not a huge dent in my wallet, plus, the person will get a bad rep on here. I've been using paypal for decades for various things and I've only been scammed a few times, unfortunately, one was over $1k. Forums like these are more likely than not, pretty trustworthy due to the average age/financial background of it's members. I use to be on a DH mountain biking forum, and those guys were on a total different spectrum.
