This is true for the manual too. There is no button to push, it's automatic for about two seconds.

Most autos allow this at low speeds, predominantly to allow the car to be rocked back and forth quickly if stuck in snow, mud etc. As you say, also very handy for low speed manoeuvres.

Another nice feature of the auto is that when you come to a standstill and want to kill the engine, you don't have to press the park button. Stopping the engine automatically engages park.
