Exclamation BMW Recall: 2010-2012 5-Series for VANOS Bolts Issue (6 cylinder models)

BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW NA Recalling 156,137 Cars for VANOS Issue

COMMENTS

BMW is recalling a 156,137 vehicles, both luxury cars and SUVs, to make sure bolts holding a component in their six-cylinder engines don't break loose and cause stalling or engine damage.

BMW says it has told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that in rare cases, bolts holding the variable camshaft timing unit may come loose or break, causing the engine to go into a "safe mode." If the problem continues, it can lead to stalling, engine damage – and it may not start.

Drivers will know of a telltale sign of trouble when the "check engine" or "service engine soon" light illuminates. BMW says they need to contact a dealer for service immediately. If the car stalls, they should get over to the side of the road and call for a tow.

The problem is confined to 2010 to 2012 vehicles with the popular inline six-cylinder engine. Those vehicles being recalled include:

2010-12 1 Series
2010-12 3 Series
2010-2012 5 Series
2010-12 5 Series Gran Turismo
2012 6 Series
2010-2012 X3 crossover
2010-12 X5 crossover
2010-12 X6 crossover
2010-12 Z4 sports car

I have two cars with this engine that are affected by the recall: 2011 x5 and 2011 535i.

Two days ago I dropped of the X5 and picked it up yesterday. All sounded and worked well before, and did the same after.

I have made an appt to have my 535i worked on in a couple of weeks.

Wondering if anyone has seen any issues with their car after they recall work has been done? anything to look for?

I hate it when a factory assembled engine that is running fine with no issues is touched and worked on by mechanics at the dealership.

Is that only for cars sold in North America? I have not come across this in the UK.

I received mail for both my cars (2011 X5 35i and 2011 535i). If it were me, I would call a local dealership and ask them, regardless of whether you have received a mail or not.

From Edmund's article below:
"Owners can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417"

Most of the time, they do a phased notice mailing for large scale recalls. They don't want everyone running to the dealer all at once. You'll get yours in the mail eventually if you're in the VIN range.

Thanks, I just called that 800 number up and my 2012 535i is not on the Vanos recall list. I guess not all 2012 535i are part of the recall.

Just got mine done a few days ago. For the inconvenience they gave me a $50 credit in the accessories dept!

Vanos recall

Had mine done, (4/10) build date, and the car is much quieter than before. Kinda makes me wonder what was rattling around prior. Very pleased with service performed. A positive dealer experience...for a change.

My car has an engine noise after replacing VANOS. The local dealer said the noise was caused the rod bearing deformed in the 2nd cylinder, others are good. Nothing to do with the VANOS replacement but the noise us still there after replacing a new bearing. Any one had this experience? Is the rod bearing failure a common issue in N55 engine?

You should start a new thread as no one will chime in as this is the Vanos thread.

Even my engine has started giving rattling noise ...523i 2010-2011 model.

I hope it is not related to recalling thing. I did sent it and they changed VANOS bolts.

I am worried as the dealer now says the rattling may be due to idler pulley, timing chain, oil pressure or DME, and everything might have to be replaced!!
