Minor accident

So, i am really anal about scratches and what not like most of you. I got rear ended on the highway a few weeks ago. I was expecting to see a good amount of damage on my bumper but saw only a few small scratches. The body shop said they would replace the diffuser and bumper and the other guys insurance company wrote me a check for 1800 dollars. So, how many of you would get it fixed and how many would just leave it. They'd also try to clean out the ac controls as sprite flew in it and made some of the keys sticky. Its a 2014 535d with 37k miles on it and i intend to keep it until it dies. I cleaned it and all you can see is 2 round dents from the other guys bunper and a line across the back. Can't even see the white line anymore. Is there a good chance there is more damage i cannot see?

Thanks for your input!

Try doing a paint correction using a compound like CG's V32/V34 followed by V36. When my Corolla got bumped it sorta looked like yours but with more rub marks and to my surprise I was able to get it out! Does it look like the diffuser can pop back into place? I don't think there should be any damages underneath.

Man, if you were close to me I'd do it for you!

If you're familiar with paint correction, I'd try that first. If not, maybe have a reputable detailer give it a shot? Worst case you spend 100-200 and still have plenty left over to replace the parts. Make a "wanted" post in the classifieds for a rear bumper and diffuser, you'll get them much cheaper than from the dealer and can just get them painted/installed. You could probably even upgrade diffusers rather than replace the stock if you prefer. I'd much rather try to buff it out or buy used / upgraded parts rather than just hand the 1800 over to get OEM replacements

I'd be very surprised if it did any damage under there though. Do you have comfort access for the trunk, and if so is it working fine?

I don't have comfort access. I guess my issue is that when i push on the bumper now there is a little give to it. Not sure if thats normal bc i normally dont push on it....also, my car took a good minute to start after i got hit so i am thinking there may be more to it or maybe my sensors were going wacky. Would a good detailer touch up the paint or just buff scratches out? Hate seeing the scratches and will probably look worse in the summer ?. I have a 535d. Any good looking diffusers out there for the non dual exhausts? Any good rear bumper replacements that look sleek that you guys know of?

Thanks !

Paint the bumper and have the a/c control panel replaced. The soda can cause damage to the electronics/circuit board over time.

Find a top notch body shop who can refinish like new. Look for shops who are Tesla, Rolls, Bentley approved.

BMW has good standards as well, but in most cities dealers are the BMW approved shops. And I find most dealers don't understand the body business. Most, not all.

Good luck.

As others have suggested, polish and see what it looks like. You can't mess it up at this point. My guess is that your going to have to get the bumper repainted however. If the cover can be reused, you might end up with a couple of bucks in your pocket. Don't have them do anything but replace the diffuser though. It's $100 new and comes painted. As others suggested, get the AC controls replaced, or at least remove and clean throughly.

Garage List
Same thing happened to me right before Thanksgiving.

I do not have any paint damage but you can see the print of the actual bumper on the bumper cover.

I am going to have the whole thing replaced including the diffuser. Luckly, the whole thing was caught on my dash cam which kinda kills any conversation. The other party did not think there was any major damage to my car.

I reminded him that the car only has 2500 miles and I decide how big the damage is.

Of course he was messing with his cell phone when he rear ended me in stop and go traffic.

If I were the OP, I would get the bumper painted and upgrade the diffuser with the BMW Performance version.

Getting it repaired. 535d doesnt have a lot of options and i dont plan on turing my dual exhaust to quads so i just had them paint the diffuser jet black to match the car.
