I think there's a bit of leeway built in - if you update to a newer version within x period of time then it doesn't ask you for the code. Try it and see....

Yes that works now. You have to be pretty well zoomed in (200yd or less) and not all city centres have it.

hi all, managed to donwload the 2013 maps. on each of the disks, there is a config.nfm file. Does this need to be copied over. In disk 3, contained inside the pkgdb file, there is a sub directory named "GUIDEDTOUR_ECE_1_14_0". These are zip files so do I need to unzip them also. (Using Jzip to extract the ISO files, this file did not extract)
any assistance appreciated

I am hoping the ISO files are ok, then simply extract using Jzip and copy onto USB flashdrive. I just need to know whether the config.nfm files need to be copied over also, as it is a seperate file outside the main
pkgdb file directory. hope this makes sense.

Thanks to Sergej, my BMW 2010 maps now uploaded to 2013 but it took me 1hr 30min using a 32GB USB flasdrive. Much cheaper option than main dealer who would charge nearly £200 for the privelege. email *****************

Garage List
My local dealer told me it would cost £250 for the update - but that it was only to the 2012 premium as the 2013 was not yet out.

I had not the heart to tell them I already had 2013 installed for a fifth of their price

The bottom line is though, however many upgrades you have your £2000 pro nav is a pile of dog ex. Because:-

1 - even with 7 digit post codes, some will still be missing.
2 - however up to date the maps, the engine is still lanmentable and does not route via B & C roads unless it means avoiding a 300 miles detour. Anything less, and it detours you via an A-Road. I exagerate for effect, but the detours in suggests are a joke frankly.
3 - for any journey where I really care about taking the most efficient route and I don't know my own way, I use my old TomTom with IQ routes - wins every time. Sad by true.
4 - the detail of the traffic messaging is impossible to read while driving - exceptionally dangerous
5 - the Pro-nav is nice for RTTI (when its running, which is only 90% of the time!!!) and for the pretty relief pictures and being able to zoom out and plan ahead for the RTTI (so you can make your own route around, lol!)

I am not a BMW hater, I love my F11, but the nav is the most expensive 9iss take in motoring option history, IMHO.

It will of course get you to your destination, but be prepared for it to take you well out of the way. Considering its the ultimate driving machine, its desire to only use Motorways and A roads is especially ironic.

BMW should be ashamed - as a minumum, for £2k I would expect:-
  • The routing to use the TomTom enginee with IQ routes - trust me you cannot get better as they use actual travel time data for each road segment, not (just) algorithms - they will suggest some bizarre routes that you will try once and realise they are not bizarre at all and will use forevermore after that.
  • Over the air weekly updates of the IQ information
  • Quarterly over the air updates of the maps
  • All this included "free" as part of the Connected Drive service as a minimum, and honestly, for £2k, for the lifetime of the first owner at least would be entirely reasonable, but as a minimum part of the future fee for Connected Drive, and without that going up (probably with it coming down - I guess its a crazy price)

Then the pro nav would be worthy of the price tag, just.

We should all moan like hell to everyone we meet about this rip off - dent thier sales and the next one you buy might be better. Keep taking it up the ???? and we will have this for ever.

I have just ordered a new TomTom with lifetime map updates to keep in the glovebox - Enough said? BMW are you listening? I spent £50K on the worlds best exec saloon and I tell everyone I meet that a £100 Tom-Tom knocks socks off your £2K Nav. Ashamed, embarassed? You should be.

Why did you spec it then if you hate it so much? I'd happily pay £2k anyway not to have some ugly dangly thing clamped to the windscreen with a horrible sucker and wires everywhere. I've never had an issue with my Nav.

PS: I have not seen the downtown 3-D buildings, which does look cool, but fundamentally, a Nav should first and foremost provide good navigation, quickly to your chosen destination, by the quickest route (in real terms and real time). And for £2k, it shoudl be the best navigation on teh market AND have all these bells and whistles.

Would I stick a camera phone lens on a £2000 Nikon camera, or a 1MP sensor? No. Same principal. For all the bells and whistles, it has to perform the most basic function as well and frankly better than a cheapy.

+1 to stealthbomber.

BMW should be ashamed of their sat nav. It's routing logic is pathetic - it will suggest a 20 mile detour to use 2 miles of motorway, rather than travel 2 miles on the A road you're already on. Tell it to avoid motorways and it'll tell you to take a 20 mile detour through C roads.

Ask it to take you somewhere you don't know, and it cant. I got fed up driving around randomly trying to follow the sat nav and ended up using it like a paper map, reading the street names to get me where I needed to go.

It'll randomly tell you to cross to the other carriageway on dual carriageways that have been there for 10 + years, to do U-turns on motorways, and to leap off flyovers that have been there for 40 years.

My dealer has replaced the head unit and had the cheek - blaming BMW - to charge me £250 to update the software for a warranty, safety repair that didn't fix the problem.

Utter crap, never mind the ridiculous data entry system - a 26 position rotary wheel! What century are we in, haven't they heard of touch screens?

In my experience any Android app is better at a hundredth of the price.
