535xi nappa or dakota?
Been lurking for a while but finally ordered an alpine white 535xi. Decided on oyster interior but chose the Dakota leather after the CA talked me out of Nappa. What do you guys think?

I have alpine white with black Dakota. The leather is a little on the hard side. From the LA auto show I noticed that the leather gets softer with use and the durability is unquestionably fantastic. However, the Nappa Leather is a whole different league. It is like butter. It like the difference between a nice wool sweater and a cashmere sweater. Both are good and comfortable but the cashmere is in a whole different place.

Lexus cars have had this "nappa" equivalent leather for long long time..... I love that soft smooth glove leather, but could not justify the additional softness for $1k more.

I've heard reference to the durability of the Dakota Leather being great, but how's the Nappa durability?

It's a personal thing. I prefer the Dakota - had it on both Bimmers. I had Nappa on an Audi and Infinity and found it too smooth and soft for my liking. Dakota was a nice change.
There's also a minor design issue (admittedly I'm a bit anal in this department): my car's interior is light (Oyster on Black) - and the Oyster colored portion of the dashboard material is nicely patterned after the Dakota's imprint. It creates nice continuity of design. |

+1 on prior 2 posts. It is a personal decision with no *best* or *right* answer. I never thought about the imprint with the Oyster matching - a nice touch.

I had the Nappa in my 08X5 and have it in my F10 and prefer it to the Dakota leather.
You have to live with it, so the question is, what would you prefer to be sitting on during your morning commute. |

Just before the car arrived at the dealership, I learned of the M-Sport package, so canceled my order and re-ordered with the M-Sport and also took that opportunity to spec the Nappa leather. Should be here within the next couple of weeks, or so Roger |

It also depends on the premium needed for Nappa.... Here in Hong Kong, it comes out to USD10K additional (included tax)..... I guess I will be going with Dakota.....

Decided to stick with Dakota. Felt the Nappa would wear and scratch to easily. Especially with out the perforations for the cooled seats

I prefer Dakota. The nappa is way too smooth for me. I makes the car look nice, but the Dakota feels like it has grip on my butt, and it's soft too. Whoever said it was a basketball has lost their sense of touch! Hehehe. But yeh, it's nice.
