Stubborn water marks
I might have the harshest water around and everything my sprinklers go on at night, it always seems to get a lil water on my car. What\'s the best way to get rid of these water marks? Btw, i sometime park across the street just to avoid the sprinklers lol and I know about water softeners but way too expensive

I am no ones dad but I also know the trick
It is the same after a drivers safety training with water obstacles. White limescale (correct word?) marks all around everywhere on the paint. The best way to get rid of it indeed vinegar: 1. Clean the car from dirty completely. 2. Some amount of vinegar into a 10 liter bucket of warm water. 3. Use a microfiber cloth and whipe the car clean with this solution. The vingear will dissolved the limescale and so the white spots will go away. 4. Clean the car again to remove the vingear from the paint completely. You have to experiment a little bit with the amount of vinegar and perhaps do it twice if it is not gone away the first time, but it works quite well. |

Vinegar will not damage the paint. I advise you use a spray bottle for the mixture. Fill the spray bottle halfway with distilled vinegar, then fill the remaining half with distilled water. Spray onto the affected area and wipe down with a microfiber towel. This is a common solution that car enthusiasts use (and even professional detailers). But it is only effective on light water marks/etching. The solution breaks down the minerals found in the water mark causing the mark to lighten or disappear. If the water mark has etched deeply into your paint, this solution will not make much of a difference. Deeply etched water marks will require compound and polishing steps to remove.
If the vinegar doesn't work, you can purchase and try Chemical Guys Water Spot Remover or Meguiar's Scratch X. But again, if they don't work, it means the etching is really deep into the clear coat and serious polishing will be the only solution. |

A 50% solution is very corrosive. So I do not advice to go that far with the concentration to not damage the paint. Personally I think a concentration auf 5-10% is enough, because there are only a few milligrams of limescale on the paint and the amount of acetic acid should be enough to dissolve this. But perhaps I am just a coward...

I was able to completely remove my water spots with Klasse AIO polish... very easy to apply and wipe off. It was the first time I have ever used it and did not realize it was going to be so easy. Then I sealed it with the Klasse sealant... then waxed it with Auto Glym HD wax. No water spots since.

Yes I used the white vinegar (which contains in Germany 25% acetic acid). I think in the states this one will be available but I am not sure that is also 25%:
Edit: Ok, it's just 5%. But I found at amazon.com this one: http://www.amazon.com/Vinegar-Essenz.../dp/B000LRH7TY @Ridonculous Ok, I see why you are using the 50% solution. If it is just 5% in the states, then this makes sence. For Germany the typical white vinegar is 25%, so there is a big difference between a 2,5% solution of acetic acid against a 12,5% solution. Sorry for my wrong remark. Last edited by itf joegun; 08-17-2011 at 01:45 PM.. |

Klasse All In One (AIO) does the perfect job removing all water spots. I use it for paint AND for windshield / windows.
Klasse Sealant Glaze on paint after and top it with p21s carnauba. Best there is. Periodicaly treat my windshield with klasse AIO to make it look like new. |

For me it makes no sense to da a removal based on physical cleaning methods, because limescale disolves without problems in mild acid. I think with the physical cleaning methods the paint is imho more stressed as with the chemical based cleaning method.

very true, I would use the physical cleaning methods if the vinegar can't get it out.
