How to repair your F10 535i front brakes and sensors with out spending 500-1000 dollars and reset the service light for the front brakes. This does not cover rotor replacement. There is another tutorial somewhere out there for that. This assumes that you didn't completely noob it and kept driving 1000 miles after your warning popped up or continued to race-brake after the light came on. This also assumes that you have had your rotors replaced from a recent service or you have measured your rotors and they are within safe spec. FYI, I drove another 600 miles after the warning and didn't create hot spots on my rotor. Even that's pushing it too far, don't do that. Once you get the warning light, brake very lightly and replace asap.

Hardware:
OEM Brake pads
OEM sensor

I can't stress the OEM sensor enough. They are very prone to faultiness. Get a quality sensor and handle with care all the way into the install. They're too sensitive. Treat it like a dirty nuke, don't drop that shit!

Tools needed:

1. Jack and BMW jack adaptor
2. Brake caliper tools set or decent size c-clamp and a small block of wood
3. Breaker bar
4. Torque wrench
5. 17mm socket
6. Big flat head screw driver
7. Tiny flathead screw driver
8. Tiny needle nose pliers
9. Ratchet with small extension
10. H7 hex socket or Allen for guide pin removal
11. Rubber mallet
12. Flash light
13. Gloves and a rag

Steps for brake and brake sensor replacement:

1. Turn the car off.
2. Open hood and take off the brake fluid cap.
3. Starting from the driver side, break the lug nuts loose, do no take them off just break the tension.
4. Jack the car up.
5. Now fully remove the lug nuts.
6. Pop the brake clip off with a big flat head screw driver pushing the clip up and off. Careful it doesn't pop off in your face there is some tension in the clip. To prevent this place your other hand over the clip while removing.

7. Remove the brake sensor from their clips, but not the connection at the pad.

8. Now remove the two plastic dust caps over the guiding pins in the rear of the calipers.

9. Remove the guiding pins using the H7 hex socket. Do not completely take the guiding pins out, just detach them from the caliper. You know when they're free. You'll fell the tension has lessened.

10. Now from grab the back of the caliper with both hands and pull very hard towards you. The goal is to depress the caliper piston with the old pad in place. This will allow for clearance over the rotor and from the brake assembly itself.

11. Place a box under the caliper for it to rest on once removed or bungee or just hang the caliper, your choice. The reason is so you can leave the brake line connected with out damaging it.

12. Now follow the line up to the top of the brake sensor and open the protective plastic hosing guarding the top-connector. Use a small flat screw drive to release the two bottom clips. Careful not to break those. Doesn't require much pressure. Now disconnect the sensor clip.

13. Remove the old pads. The outer one should just fall out. The one in the piston needs to be pulled out. Yank it. The reason I didn't suggest pulling the sensor from the pad yet is so that you could get a closer look at it. Notice how the guides in the sensor fit into the dimple of the pad. Now yank the sensor from the pad and reattach so you are prepared for that step. Notice the click sound indicating it's attached.
14. Depress the caliber piston using a Brake Caliper Tool Set or the C-Clamp technique. Be sure that the brake fluid cap is off.
15. Lay the pads face down on a rag and liberally apply 'brake quite' grease to the rears of the pad.
16. Insert the brake pad connecting to the piston first.
17. Align the outer brake pad and insert.
18. Make sure the guide pins are not visible on the inner part of the caliper so you can slide the brake assembly over the rotor.
19. Now reattach the brake assembly with your hands holding it from the rear and a finger tip on each pin. The reason for this is so you can feel where the guiding pins line. With you fingers on the tips of the guiding pins and slight pressure on them pushing in towards you, wiggle the assembly around until you feel the pins drop into their threads.
20. Slightly tighten the top guiding pin until it's attached by a few threads.
21. Now wiggle the bottom around until it's lined up and completely tighten it down. I don't know the ft lbs, but it's a snug fit meaning about 2 hard cranks(someone can chime in here).
22. Hook up your new sensor at the top and close the protective housing.
23. Begin clipping in the new sensor line.
24. With the brake pad sensor node facing you insert the sensor towards the brake pad in a straight fashion. Do not line it up at an angled approach when attempting to clip on the sensor at the brake pad.

25. Once it's inserted, but the clip has not clicked fully in yet, begin putting pressure inward. Use slight up and down wiggling to get to to clip. You'll hear clicking sound. This is also where the tiny pliers comes in handy if you need to remove it. Like I said, they're very sensitive so be careful and pull straight out using the tiny pliers. Do not put the needle nose tips over the node when pulling out. Grab from above.
26. Reattach the brake clip.

27. Reattach your wheel. I torque my lug nuts to 96ft lbs some people go higher.
28. Now put the brake cap back on and pump the brakes until the pedal feels tight.

Time to reset the front brake service light.

How to reset the service light:

1. Unlock the car
2. Turn the car on, but don't turn the engine over.
3. Close the door.
4. If you have a previous brake warning press "ok" on the nav screen to clear it from view and press "bc" on the stalk to clear it from the dash.
5. Press "bc" until the date is showing.
6. Release the electronic parking brake.
7. Hold the reset button until the reset option displays and then release the button. If the front brake reset is not the first option keep cycling through until the reset front brake option appears.
8. Hold the reset button until it says "reset"? And release the button again.
9. Hold it once more until progress bar is finished and success message has displayed.

Now go do the other side of the car, same steps minus the sensor and the reset method. Should take you a quarter of the time as the driver side is the hardest.

Enjoy, good luck and I'm not responsible if you break your shit.

Great DIY write-up. Collect it for the job when time comes.
