Drove the new 2011 5 Series!!! WOOT

No, this post isn't about a e90, but i couldn't resist to share the goodness.

So I got invited to a BMW drive event over the weekend, here in montreal, where they had the only 6 bmw 5 series (2 550i, 4 535i) currently on the road in canada (that's what the instructors said, but i did see another white 535i driving around downtown Montreal this afternoon).

First impressions, amazing... no questions asked, the adjustable suspension is soo damn awesome I can't explain it. Switching between normal and sports, completely transforms the car. They setup a short track for us to throw the cars around, and i mean "THROW THEM AROUND"... as long as the DTC stayed on, we were free to push as hard as we could... and boy did I ever. Compared to my 335i xDrive sedan, it didn't feel any heavier in the bends with the suspension in sports mode, though a bit slower to 60. The 550i on the other hand, with its glorious twin turbo v8, was SCARRY fast..

The nerd level on this car is mind blowing, from the LCD screen on the dashboard, to the 6 different cameras, the HUD, the 8 speed transmission, the electronic handbrake with automatic stop/go, the owners manual integrated in the iDrive, the little scrolling wheel on the steering wheel... for a techno geek like myself, this car is pure joy.

Now for the pics...

Nice. I actually like the styling of the new F10s. From some angles, they look like larger 3 series. Updated interiors look really nice also. Thanks for sharing.

No holes in console. I like that.

First thing I would do is black out the tailpipes on the 550. Like the wheels though.
The F10 is a big step forward. A 530d would be a sweet tourer.

Beauty is obviously in the eye of the beholder, but I've seen the car in person at Sterling BMW next to a 2010 E60 (both black 550's) and I must say the front end of the new 5er looks like crap compared to the (silly) front end of the 2010 5er.

The body panel line between the hood and front fascia makes the design look cheap to me (like a Chrysler 300). And the bumper is just too tall and flat-faced; it looks like they were moving the clay model around the design studio and accidently smushed the nose against a wall and said "hey, that looks really good, let's keep it!" I've always liked the short overhang/blunt-nosed look of the 80's BMWs especially the E30, but those cars had character lines (non-integrated bumpers, non-aero headlights, etc.) which broke up the smoothness of the face; I think BMW tried to capture that design again, but it just doesn't look right.

The rest of the body looks like typically good BMW design, and the interior is just gorgeous.

Now if I could just muster up the nads to buy the M3 sedan they had next to it...

Sweet! Been 4 1/2 years since I've been to one of those events, and it was the E90 330i along with the infiniti g35 and audi a4 3.2.

Those new 5's look sweet--only thing I'd change would be the XC90 nose which seems to be the direction BMW is going (why not have the hood open forward like in grandpa's days?). And they messed up the 550i with the LS460 or Acura TL style tailpipes (thought BMW was functional, not ornamental?).

That V8 twin-turbo sets apart the boys(A6/E550/M45/GS460etc) from the man, even in stock form with tune who needs M5.

I called up about this event for NYC and they suck. It is only a street drive no pushing the car to its limit. How boring! Rip off lol

My friend said the wheels on the 550i are copied from JDM Mugen

Is it me or is the m-sport missing on the 550? It looks much more bland than the outgoing model and needs more to differentiate it from the rest of the F10 pack.

Looks like the new 5er gets regular cupholders in the center console (although they are as far forward as they possibly could be).

Do you have more pics of the interior (screen, steering wheel, etc.)? Also, the "scrolling wheel" on the steering wheel has been in American cars for a while, especially GM.
