I got the tune and haven't noticed any change in sound, so I guess I've answered my own question.

One more question....

The Dinan tuner at the BMW dealership told me that the ecu could take a couple of days to adjust to the changes.

Was there a noticeable change for those of you that got the Dinan tune (after the ecu finally adjusted)?

I didn't notice a massive power change. I can tell there is more power there, but nothing earth shattering yet. I can feel it more in the top end than the bottom end. I'm assuming that the bottom end will get better after the ecu adjusts.

I had a 180 mile drive to get home after I had the stage 2 done but I felt the power difference between stage 1 and 2 immediately. Much more low end and midrange.

I felt the change in power delivery immediately when pulling away from the dealership. It is a very noticeable improvement in first and second gear.

Your experience sounds like most member's experience with Stage 1. Stage 2 delivers much more power at the low end than Stage 1. Maybe they need to re-install the software.

This is kinda what I was thinking.....although, the guy at Classic BMW told me to allow 200 miles for the ecu to fully adjust. I'll give it that long. He offered to DYNO the car if need be.

My understanding is the ECU adjustment from driving in minor - you won't feel a big difference with that. My dealer told me to drive it hard for the first day or two but with a long busy highway drive home I really couldn't. I could instantly feel the difference as soon as I drove out of his parking lot and it was a big difference in the lower gears at lower revs!

If you can't feel a big difference in 1st and 2nd then perhaps something is not right with your tune. Have your dealer re-check it. Did it really take the stage 2 tune or is it still stage 1. You paid good money for this so best to be sure.

A tuned 550 is fast, but has no chance against an M5.

My tuned550ix: 0-100km/h 4.6s, 0-200km/h 14.5s with a perfect launch.
My tuned M3: 0-100km/h 4.5s, 0-200km/h 14.0s with LC and dry road.

Update.....

Okay, so on my way to work this morning, I accelerated hard on a very long strip by my house. The rear wheels broke free extremely easy. Traction control jumped in quickly to stop it.

I have a feeling that my tune went well and I'm just expecting too much from the "feel". The car seems to accelerate very well, but I'm not getting that feeling of being pushed back into the seat really hard.

In conclusion, I think my car is tuned correctly, but at the end of the day....I'm still driving a luxury car (which takes a lot of the feel out of it).

Could this be a correct statement?

Try sitting in the passenger seat and let someone else drive it - you will feel pushed back into the seat then.

I also agree that this is a big luxury car and it doesn't feel as fast as it really is. I'm still dissappointed with this aspect of the car - it's too soft for my tastes. I prefer a car that is a bit more raw, which is why I am thinking of selling mine and going back to a C63 or similar.

Hey CID, I wouldn't go so far as to say not a chance, a tuned 550 (Hartge use of low power band) against a non tuned M5 is not a given. The i excels in rolling acceleration, I have pulled away from quite an array of talent on the autobahn from 100kmh and with the way I broke my 550i in plus the Hartge tune, I expect to see few rivals.

I really am not impressed with dinans torque power band, do they have published 0-120mph or higher figures?

I really like the 550i. It's a great car. I chose the car, after I could not locate an M3 (at the time, nobody had any in stock). So, the salesman eventually convinced me that the 550i was a very capable sports car in it's own right. He also convinced me to spend a lot more money

I don't regret my decision to get it. However, next time around.....I'll be a bit more patient and get the m5 (yes, I wanted the M3.....but after having spent the money I did on my M-Sport 550i and Dinan upgrade, a little more would have gotten me an M5).

That being said, I had the traction control turned off today and actually spun the wheels at a traffic light....without even trying. Due to the fact that the car is a big luxury car, I didn't realize the wheels were spinning (mind you, it didn't take long for me to figure it out). So, the power is certainly there.

There seems to be very little debate in this thread. It's been more helpful than anything.....

I reset my transmission tonight and it seems to have solved my problem. While the power seemed to be in the car, the throttle was really lazy. The reset was the trick. Now, the power seems to be a whole lot more immediate. It makes me wonder how many people haven't done this, after they re-flashed their BMW.

1) Push start button once, with foot OFF of brake. Turns power on, but does not start car.
2) Push accelerator down for 30 seconds (hold it to the floor).
3) After 30 seconds, turn car completely off and wait a couple of minutes (2 minutes seems to be fine)
4) Start car as you normally would do.......throttle response should be immediate.

Time will bring more tunes and bolt ons that should close that gap in acceleration.

But then tune the M5 and i is toast

I also had a GT-R prior to my 550 and it was, without any doubt, much quicker in every aspect.
I had 600 hp on tune only on my GT-R and there hasn't been a car I've driven feel remotely the same. I felt like I lost a child the day I got rid of it.

I've had and sold my 09 GTR tune only and since then have had the fortune to own a stage 2 Mazdaspeed 3, stage 1 1M, stage 2 Audi B8 S4, and F10 550i and although I enjoy them all in various ways, nothing will ever come close to the GT-R for me.

It has no soul but it always begged to be driven hard and no matter how hard I would drive it, it always kept me within my limits. The car deserves its positive reputation and I look forward to the day I can own another one.
