After a 12 hour drive FAN GOES CRAZY while car is off
My car has been running for 12 hours,
I got back into North Carolina from NYC and I have been driving it hard the whole way, I parked the car after I arrived and went into a hookah bar for a half hour. I drove back home and after I turned my car off the car sounded like a jet, with the fans on full blast, along with a drivetrain malfunction that I got 10 minutes before my trip ended and I took an exit and stopped my car. The loud fans was making me feel bad for my neighbors since eveyone has work tomorrow. I'm thinking it's not Because of hauling ass for 12 hours, since they do that in Germany. Any thoughts? |

I've had the fans run after turning off the car when it is very hot outside. The malfunction sounds like an issue though.

iv noticed that alot of turbo cars have the fan running after the car is off. iv had that with my previous vw cc and my current 528xi. im assuming its just to cool off the turbo. the malfunction is obliviously not normal though.....

The fan being on was normal, but this time it sounded like a jet, the problem disappeared until this morning, i had just arrived in school, right inside the parking lot i got the drivetrain malfunction, engine over heating, the fans going crazy, and it was snowing outside. I had only been on the road for an hour, driving normally.

The problem started progressing, the car is at the workshop at the moment. After a few minutes of startup the car started overheating. When i took it to the workshop and when my service advisor tried to pull it into the garage, the car stalled. This is really weird, i haven't heard of anyone else having this problem with the f10 m5. My service advisor and I are both really curious about what is going on with the car.

Good luck with it - I'd imagine a quick OBDII scan would reveal something pretty quickly.

This could be along shot and not sure if they are fitted to US cars but catalytic converters get an auto regeneration every now and then. Normally this happens when you are driving and goes unnoticed but if it triggers near the time the engine stops then the fans will go full tilt for at least 5 mins. My old Audi did this a couple of times and I was convinced there was something wrong with the car. The dealer eventually advised me what was happening but there was nothing in the manual. You can usually tell by a smell of burning coming from under the car. As I said, may not be applicable to you guys.

The only thing I can think of, this last happened to me when my water pump went out. It would overheat within 5min, and the fans would sound like a jet trying to cool the car off.

I got the car back a few days ago, they tested and replaced the fans. Right the next day after school I started my car (cold start) the car wasn't even at operating temperature the fans started blasting again. I took it to the workshop again and parked it there. The entire dealership could hear my fans. I think something is seriously wrong with the car, when my sa tried to start the car again to move it it stalled.
