550i With Megan Mufflers (Videos / Photos)

Alright I've been asked for this a while so figure Id make a thread to help anyone out.

I have a 550i (N63) and I bought on eBay the Megan Mufflers with the 2.5 piping for the 535i. The 550i has 2.75 stock piping, but lots of kinks thru out, so honestly I didn't care. I've had the mufflers on for about 10 months now and still love them.

I have a M5 CF diffuser installed and the mufflers were adapted to it via custom hangers, it was an easy task for the shop owner. They sound great and deep, slight drone around 80mph but honestly you tune it out quickly with music or forgetting about it. I don't notice it anymore, I just remember from when I first installed it.

As for performance wise, It felt a bit quicker ? but nothing crazy. I love you can hear the turbos a tiny bit better, with Down pipes it'll sound great, Id love to get them but not in my budget at the moment.

I took a personal video but I don't think it really does it much justice, I did however find a 650i (n63) with the Megan mufflers as well and the sound is a bit more real life.

Lingenfelter used dual 2.5 exhaust on his 1,000 horsepower corvettes for years, definitely no restriction issues with it Nice setup!

Nice! I thought about going with Megan's too but thinking about saving a bit more for the Armytrix exhaust.

I was going to build my own, but at $800 MSRP for the 650i exhaust, I may see if I can find someone whoring it out and give it a shot. The mufflers I was going to order for mine are $320 shipped, plus whatever tips I pick that will probably be $100 each... if I can find a set for around $600 id be game and it saves me being under my car sweating like crazy for hours while I make them fit and try to find short tips.

Hey man, I know this thread is old and I hit you up on Bimmerfest. I got the M5 Megans and the exhaust shop said the bends would be super aggressive to fit the 550i, so I was wondering how far up the mid pipe you cut yours (the Megan 535) for the 550? Did you cut it before the brace (tying 2 pipes together by the axle)?

The M5 Megans are just mufflers, without the axle back piping and finding a shop that can get mandrel bent sections, you almost have to have 90 degree S bends to get them to the mid pipe, clearing the control arms.

Do you have a picture of the exhaust install from underneath? Much thanks in advance!

My friend got the same M5 Megan mufflers and the shop told him the same thing before trying, but he told them to do whatever it takes, 1.5 hours later they were on. I'll try to take a photo later today of mine, and see if he can take one of his.

A well qualified muffler shop who knows their $hit can make it happen! Tho I'm still looking for a shop that can do mine because I'm too low lol!

Ok gents... I've deployed my resources and I got some CAD engineering drawings. This is based off an Eisenmann exhaust photo of the underside of the F10 550i so some distortion from the image may vary the final dimensions, but here it is in a virtual set up.

The hangers were for a M5 so the diffuser will be changed out and I'm sure there is a small amount of variance in the outlet width too. I may adjust the hangers and make them work.

I know a muffler shop can do this, but I am totally a control freak and I don't want to hack the piping and not be able to go back to stock easily and cleanly, so I'm going to buy a MIG welder and do this myself with off shelf "U-J" mandrel bent sections, cut them and weld them.

Anyone have dimensions on the M5 diffuser outlet? I need width of the outlet and the space in between them.

Megan F10 M5 Mufflers on F10 550i M Sport

Here is how the design went down. I can have the PDF available to anyone if they want to do the same, but the design ended up being perfect. The only thing was I needed a shop to swage the end to 3.25" OD to fit inside the 3.25" ID into the Megan M5 Mufflers.

I bought 3" OD 4" radius mandrel bent sections online. I'm sure you can have someone locally do it without cutting and welding as 1 piece.

The template was printed out and laid out so that I can tack the piping.

I marked and cut the pipe as per the 1:1 template.

Laid out the cut sections. Orient them for the slight angle on the elbow by the muffler (like literally 5 degrees... I put a paint stir stick under the pipe and let the end touch the workbench).

Yes the welds are ugly! I ground them down and I will paint them.

But for now... I'm burning tires and gas listening to the noise!!

Nice...those 4" Supremos are perfect! More angle shots if you could?

Nice to see the 4" tips fit through the stock 550i valance/diffuser. I was worried about that, so I went w/ the 3.5". Now, I kind of wish I went w/ the 4" because they were cheaper as they're only the mufflers. Great job on the piping too!

Looks great !!
I love the sound they make, better than the 535 megans I have.

I now get why the bend, it would have been a tad less of a bend if you would have done the M5 diffuser.

Same here...would love to rock some 4" quads on my Meisterschaft but unfortunately they're welded on

They don't quite fit although they are 8.5" side to side, but the trapezoidal opening doesn't quite allow the tips to be close to the top. So they basically have half the diameter in the opening. Also, the outer most tip, the tip tapers inwards to the muffler pipe and that allows for the opening to be closer as well.

I'm going to get the OEM M5 diffuser so i'll have to adjust the hangers again, but the tips should not look like they are sticking out as much with the two "hoods" over the exhaust port area.

Has anyone had the Megan mufflers for longer than a year? Wondering what they sound like long term.

Also, any thoughts on fitting the 4" quads with this diffuser? Should it fit?

Don't think 4" tips will fit on that diffuser. You'd have to go OE or something made for a M5. I tried M5 mufflers with a standard dual opening diffuser and it touched the diffuser sides. I ended up selling the setup and going with 3.5" tips.

From the measurement's I've taken, that diffuser has wider openings than the standard 550i diffuser (by about half an inch) I know that the 550i diffuser is not really a good fit due to the trapezoid shapes.
