Door handle and side indicator trim

I am looking to black out these trim pieces. I know you can buy different side indicator trim pieces but I want the OEM style. I was hoping to just buy new pieces and have them painted but my dealership quoted me a rediculous price. Are these parts easily removed? I might just try the shadowline tape (electrical tape in the photos to see if I liked it). Any thoughts?

For the fenders there are options of matte black and carbon around in online shops. Price varies from 70 to 120$.

For the door handles if i reckon well some applied window tint (??). Maybe it was for something else.

Side indicator is available in black matte from http://************/3pm669e, I bought that one and had it painted gloss black at a body shop. Not difficult to swap.

Door handle chrome strip is integral to the handle, vinyl apply seems to be the only option.

I decided to get to the bottom of this. I have saved about $1000 from tips on this forum so I gave it a go:

I removed a chrome door handle insert for paint!

** They are plastic and may break. I don't know if you can even buy them without an entire handle a$$embly so proceed at your own risk!! **

All you need is a small flat screwdriver and a piece of dental floss or fishing line. The front has a smaller hook than the rear. There is adhesive. A small amount of Goo Gone or WD40 will remove the adhesive but you will probably need new adhesive to reinstall. I removed it without chemicals.

Gently pry the FRONT of the insert up. Slide the fishing line or floss under the insert and use it to break the adhesive from front to back. Use the screwdriver to lift as needed but BE CAREFUL!

That's great!! So, Krash, are you going to sand them down and paint them yourself?

It is great, don't know if I have the nerve to do it myself. Have to check the cost of a new handle.

Let us know what you end up doing...
How it goes back on and looks..?

Thanks!!

Im ordering the Jlevisw fender light trims and will let the professionals paint all 6 pieces to match shadowline. I'll update my thread when it's done.

Wow you have huge balls lol. Thanks for doing and sharing this. Maybe modbargins will stock them for us in colors. I asked them to look into this for us. I wonder if we can just buy the chrome strips fron BMW. Do you see a part number on the chrome strip?

These are the last chrome parts on my car. Painted my tips this week came out perfect.

If there is a part#, it's under the adhesive. I didn't mess with it since it was still in good shape. I put it right back on. I doubt the adhesive will fair well during paint so I will be using WD40 to make sure I dont break any of them. As soon as my parts arrive from Jlevi, I'll remove them all and let you know what I find.

Someone looked it up on realoem.com and the chrome strips are not listed as a separate part from the complete handle. Would be great if they were.

For cleaning, I like 3M adhesive remover better than WD40. Then would have to figure out best replacement adhesive after they're painted so they fall back in correctly.

Looking forward to seeing how you make out with this. My last bit of chrome as well.

I have noticed that after removing and re-installing the piece that one end is loose so my adhesive will need to be replaced regardless. I have some OEM adhesive left over from my M spoiler install. It might be the same. I'll compare when I remove them all. I also have a contact at a gasket manufacturing company and they can do foam adhesive. I will have him take a look and post any feedback.

Should have my parts on Tues so I'll be updating soon...

Parts arrived early so here we go...

Forget about the string. Just get some good adhesive remover and small screw driver. Shouldn't take more than 15 mins to get them all off. Getting the adhesive off the trim took some time. Again, get a good adhesive remover. You can see the adhesive is very thin. I found a 3M Scotch brand "Indoor/Ourdoor Mounting Tape" that is much thinner than the standard mounting tape. I think it will work.

These are the only markings:

LH Driver door: LL 3
LH Rear Passenger door: L 4
RH Front Passenger door: R 1
RH Rear Passenger door: R 4

I assume a RH Driver door would be RR 3. R 1 and R 4 appear to be identical and I even swapped the parts and they fit.

Anything else before they go to paint tomorrow?
