Got the same email and was wondering the same thing. Has TomTom always been the provider of maps? The current provider sucks so if this isn't a meaningful upgrade I'll pass.

The map itself is free by downloading on web or under $20 DVD from dealers, what you are actually paying for is the FSC code.

I just paid sergej for an FSC code for under $70, and is downloading the 22GB map right now, will let you guys know the results.

Anyone done this? Worth it? Here is what the email said:

The 2013 BMW Navigation Map Update brings you hundreds of thousands of miles of new roads. So you can rest assured you’re always on the fastest and most reliable route.

And it takes care of stops along the way with now more than 7.5 million Points on Interest.

POIs are grouped into 10 easily searchable headings and now include: over 590,000 restaurants; over 95,000 hotels and accommodations; over 140,000 gas stations; and over 200,000 banks and ATMs.

So embrace the change. Purchase your first update now for just $245*, exclusively from BMW.

Map

I just did the map update. Found the map on the e90postforum. Map 2013 1A Copied to a 32g USB card. Installed using usb port in glove box. Got Activation code from ***************** Took about 1 hour.
2011 BMW 528i Build date 02/2011

updated from 2011 to 2013 1A North American Premium

You can buy the tomtom version sent via email. Cost a lot more. Did my update for under $100.

You can do the update while driving around. I just hooked up a 10amp battery charger.
Good luck

Why is the email coming from TomTom? I have a 2012 528i and wondering if this is just marketing for an update to the standard nav I have or some new TomTom based option? Anyone buy this, or does it just link to the 2013 update that was downloaded and installed as mentioned above and in the above linked forum?

Just did mine update last night, it was easy. +1 to *****************

PS, it has to be a USB flash drive, it doesn't like external USB, and might want to either drive while update or have battery charger connected

TomTom acquired TelAtlas and obviously they did a deal with BMW to be ab le to supply the updtaes directly (and sell the FSC code).

Anyone know if TomTom improved the routing logic? No one has said if this is worth the cost to upgrade...

More than likely it's the same or similar logic being used as before. I have seen plenty of new roads added to the maps in my area, but it still routes the same as it always has. For the $50 odd upgrade cost, it was worth it to me to put in the addresses in newer housing areas and have the address come up. It may not route me the best way everytime, but it sure beats pulling out a map.

Disclaimer: Yes...google maps is better, but I don't want to use my phone when I have a Nav system in my car. I'm also not usually in a rush to get anywhere, so the scenic route doesn't bother me as much.

I got the same email. I have an 11/11 built 528 and I cant imagine this upgrade will have hundreds of thousands of miles of new roads (well maybe in CHina). Based on my past experience with MB, upgrades dont really add a whole lot of value to be worth it. And the algorithms stay exactly the same

Thanks. I guess I'll pass on the upgrade.

Just did it, so with just a couple hours, I see more buildings in 3D in NYC along Hudson. Better decisions on contrast with heads up display.

Nothing dramatic so far.

Thanks to 737flyer for links. code from ***************** was perfect.

32GB flash initialized on Mac as MS-DOS (FAT) aka FAT32 copied config.nfm and pkgdb folder to root. Asked if I wanted to update ....
