New to BMW got an F10 525d,since this cold spell up here in Scotland I find she vibrates quite heavily for about 5-10secs after starting before she settles to a smooth idle. Is this normal? She's still under warranty as well so would book it in if this ain't normal. Temp had been -4.5 though each time this happened

UPDATE-So went to dealership who found nothing wrong with glow plugs etc but this morning for the first time with outside temp at -1.5* I pressed the start button followed by a brief moment of silence to which the Glow Plug light lit up for a few secs before she fired up and no vibration of engine at all. Perhaps it's fixed itself since the last cold spell as I def experienced some rough vibration on startup. Been using Millers Diesel addiditive for the last few weeks of that makes any difference?

It's defiantly the glow plug starter, I had to replace mine when I had a 535d. the car doesn't always record a fault in the log which is annoying. It’s an hours work to get replaced plus the pat which from memory was about £150. The reason you are experiencing the issue now is due to the cold weather, the plugs need help to warm up, in the milder weather the plugs don’t need any assistance to warm up.

Have you tried interrogating the cars EUC via an OBD cable and esys to see if there are any logged faults .
This way you can view the any logged faults and ask your dealer to fix them under warranty. As long as you do not clear the errors then once you have read the error code you can describe the fault and ask the dealer to check the ECU, knowing there is an error. Fairly easy to tag onto a service, or some dealers offer a "free" end of warranty check. Beware they may however try and sell you tyres or brakes discs/pads. The cables are approx £15 to £20 some come with the software on cd's, but you can download it fairly easily (Rheingold). Last edited by gtthree; 01-04-2017 at 04:58 PM.. |

search for bmw enet
on either ebay amazon alibaba Confirm it will work the F series. I ordered the cable (and software) from ebay from China and it arrived within 10 days. However I used software from the internet to ensure I had the latest version and also that it was virus free from a well known trusted coder. who has written a custom interface to allow you to connect to the car and run the diagnostic software (rheingold), you can also with other software code your car. With the diagnostic software you can also reset faults and see faults before you take your car to the dealer. Coder's website http://tokenmaster.blogspot.co.uk you will need to locate Rheingold separately but a quick google search should assist Last edited by gtthree; 01-11-2017 at 01:02 PM.. |

What did you do with your car in the end?
I have the same issue with my 530d. Slight vibration for 5-10 seconds on startup when it's slightly cold. However the other day when it was very cold I didn't get a glow plug light and the car didn't fire instantly. I had to hit the accelerator to get it to start... Taking it to a BMW specialist to see if any errors have been logged in the OBC. |

I'd keep an eye on yours as mine never vibrated before no matter how cold it was. Indi is asking £495 to replace 6 coils and the control module, anyone know if this is reasonable? |

Your Indy should be able to check for errors on the glow plugs, if not just replace the controller if this brings the cost down significantly. I purchased 6 Bosch glow plugs from eBay new for about £40, all in all it shouldn't take more than 2 hours to complete the work.

I'm in the same situation as you, the specialist i went to showed me error codes for the plug and the all the glow plugs. This was only after asking them when carrying out a service if the car had started ok and what i had experienced.
When i did the Carly scan i only had an error for the plug itself. I did consider getting a 2nd hand part at the time but the does not seem to be many about about on fleabay, only for other models. |
