This can't be right!!!
Can anyone please explain to me why I am returning 19.1 mpg when driving at the absolute maximum efficiency?
I had to take a picture of this with my phone as I couldn't believe what I was seeing... [IMG][/IMG] Last edited by Kev R; 07-18-2011 at 07:11 PM.. |

You only got 21 miles to-date. you did not even have a first fill up yet. Give it some time and the need for the engine to be broken in.
After 5000 miles, you should see some improvement. |

Right I am starting to feel a bit foolish now...I thought this was current consumption but I understand the information now if this is average consumption I cannot do any more mpg than the miles travelled...
Makes sense...Doh!!! |

Kev, got my 520d SE sports auto last week. Got about 250 miles on the clock now, and still only getting mid to high 30s on mixed drive across Cheshire countryside with a bit of town traffic thrown in. I will not get worried about mileage until I hit a few K on the clock. Even so, its already beating my previous car, an old 1.6 petrol Golf!

Anyway, you obviously do need to travel for a bit for the average consumption to be meaningful as clearly it will be 0 mpg with the engine running and the car stationary. You can see your instantaneous reading on the efficiency bar is >60 mpg so I'm sure it's OK.

Oh dear I really do feel a bit thick now...I didn't realize the graphic bar at the bottom of the rev counter was reading instantaneous mpg, I thought it represented some sort of efficiency percentage!
Anyhow I have 580 miles on the clock now with mostly motorway driving and showing an average of 41 mpg which is impressive considering I keep hitting my speed warning set at 95 mph... Cheers |

...esp how the owners manual tell you not to drive at those speeds before you hit 1200miles.
Cruise at the legal speeds and the economy will greatly improve! |

I consider myself told off The car just gets there without any effort hence the warning being set to protect my licence

LOL it also says avoid full throttle and auto kick-down. Tosh!
Give the car a decent drive to settle it in and get everything happy, then drive it hard. I've never had a new car that got driven hard that didn't loosen up significantly quicker compared to others that were nannied along for the first 1000ish miles. It's even more noticeable with bikes. Economy will be fine, I usually set my cruise to 80 on a run and get 48-50 back without any effort, you've already discovered that your concern was an average - you can reset it but I've taken to using the Journey Computer in the split screen now with auto-reset; it provides an instant reading if I'm in a bad mood and forces me to lighten up and lighten my foot.

Kev i would set my warning at 89mph rather than 95mph. Thats the difference from 6 points to a ban with a court appearance than 3. search pepipoo dot com and you will see all sorts of issues with speeding just over the limit. Not trying to preach to you matey just steering down a path.

There is also the recorded vs actual speed to consider. Indicated 90mph will be more like 86-87mph on the road.
First rule of speeding is of course don't get caught. Speed in the middle of a pack. Don't whammy it past slip roads which could have plod sat at the top of them. Don't go as fast if you can't see far enough ahead to see a car parked up waiting. I do get astonished by some of the drivers I see going past at around the ton who seem utterly oblivious to the fact that plod may have been just round that sweeping bend. Or a big traffic jam for that matter....
