Yes. After a visit in the "washing machine" at a tank station.

Do know what happened, but it was at BMW's for almost two weeks.

So, how do you wash the car now? Do you still use the automatic car wash you find in petrol stations? Any particular ones I should avoid?

I'm interested myself since I should be getting the car later this month. Thanks!

I wouldn't have thought that the force and quantity of water in an automatic car wash was significantly greater than a decent rain storm. However, it would appear to be the cause of the problem in both cases.
Personally speaking, I would never put my car through an auto-wash as I think the rotating brushes are too aggressive and they might contain foreign objects which would cause considerable damage.
That there might be a water pressure issue is now another reason to avoid them.

Auto-wash?!? Never!!! Always hand wash if you really love your car.

A BMW 5 Series can't go through a touch-free car wash? You must be kidding.
Seriously.

I've never had a car that had any problem going through a car wash.
Not about to start hand washing any time soon.

Not whether the car can go through an auto wash; it's whether you want to do that rather than hand wash. Don't you feel a closer relationship to your car when you hand wash it? Takes only 45 min to hand wash and dry off your BMW.

In Hawaii, perhaps - but less likely when the average temperature is between -5 to +5 degrees Celsius for about 8 months a year

And of course other parts of the world have it much colder than that.
