Suspension Thud/Thunk

Anyone getting a thud sort of noise at low speed (< 20mph) on uneven surfaces/speed bumps on the front suspension?

It's when the wheels drop into the hole/off the speed bump, so on extension rather than compression. It's a muted thud, not metal on metal.

Handling seems fine, it's been with the dealer this morning who've confirmed there's a noise (thankfully not my imagination) but it needs to go in for a full day to fully diagnose source and hopefully cure.

Car's done 12k miles, 14 months old.

My front suspension makes a lot of thumping/creaking noises at low speed, it seems to be getting worse. My 2008 335i did the same as it got older.

It goes in next week (Thursday) so I'll let you know.

Love the cars but each beemer I've owned has had an annoying 'niggle'

320i - front bushes replaced 3 times due to grating noise over slow bumps, and ditched it after 18 months when it developed the infamous coil/injector issue (ok, that's more than a niggle )

318d - clutch judder, 3 software updates made no difference

530d - suspension knock, and iDrive that reboots at the same bit of road regardless of time of day or length of journey time (suggests interference from somewhere as it doesn't happen anywhere else but dealer looked a bit clueless)

Quick update.

Given it's already been confirmed there's a noise, it was at the dealer all day yesterday to re-confirm there's a noise then they said they believe it's the OSF shocker so they'll order one in for today. Then they ring today to say it's on order from Germany and will now likely be next Weds. So that'll be 4 days total to (hopefully) sort it out.

Be nice to get her back tonight though, the 116i loaner is small and nippy but it's no comparison (apart from the heated seats which I'd love on mine)

my 535 xdrive suspension/steering makes a creaking/clunking sound in the front left when cornering slowly over uneven surfaces.... havent gotten around to taking it in yet. Also find the steering is unusually heavy at low speed

I have what sounds like a loose suspension in both front and back. I get thuds and clunks going over speed bumps. My e39 with 200k on it is much tighter...

My wife's Fiat 500 is almost silent over the bumps, you'd think a premium car could get it right.

My old E90 had creaking front suspension, had the bushes changed 3 times.

Mine was really bad in the right rear. When I was about to take it in, the problem just went away. Hasn't done it in six months or more. It was a couple of times per week.

Finally the replacement shocker has made its way from Germany. I can't tempt the dealer into doing a weekend fitting - they say just in case something goes wrong (changing a shocker, not rocket science) so I'm booked in for a week on Tuesday.

Another 80 mile commute in a 116i coming up.

Mine is getting worse. Be interested to hear if the new shock fixes it. I have H&R springs on order not wanting to fit them if my shocks are knackered.

I made a quick video to demonstrate the sound coming from my front left corner. You can kinda hear a metallic creak at 0:05 and then the same sound but more pronounced at 0:35. It's hard to capture with the camera microphone and is way more obvious when inside the car.

Well shows what i know about cars, to me the knocking was coming from the OS but I've just collected her and they've replaed the NS shocker.

And first impressions are it's fixed I could also convince myself that sharp right turns are better too, before there was a feeling the NS wheel was 'collapsing' under the car.

Going out for a drive later (actually to watch a couple of bands) so I'll get a longer test.

What does "NS" stand for?

NS=Near-side - left/passenger side for us UK bods

Likewise, OS=Off-side - right/drivers side

Mine creaks a bit on going over speed bump, more evident in colder weather. Only happens to the front both left & right.

Taking my car in next Monday to dealer to they can check it out.

KMAC, I hear that in your video. Similar sound to mine.

Bobblehead, which dealer? I took mine into BMW toronto and did a test drive with the shop foreman, Costa. He heard the noise when we went over some uneven surfaces, but they weren't able to fix/find anything.

I've been thinking about lowering my car on ACS springs, which I'd take it to Bimmersport for. Was thinking i'd have them work with BMW mississauga on a diagnosing/fixing this while they do the spring job.

Curious to know what your findings will be...

Same place.

I am waiting for coilovers from KW. Looking for V3 ... still not out yet. Going all the way to improve handling & ride.

Let see if the dealer can find anything. Actually, I doubt it, usually they will say ..."issue not found, customer to monitor"

Make sure you see Costa the shop foreman to show him the noise if you can, maybe him hearing it from a number of customers will make them look a bit harder for a solution...

Mine does the same thing since a year ago everytime I make a turn and hit a speed bump, it sound like I scrape the bumper on the speed bump.
Took it to the dealer they always say they cannot replicate the issue.
Now my car is about to hit 50k miles, I'm going to the dealers every week and hope I can replicate it with a tech. But still no luck.

Hi,
I have an F11 that goes out of warranty later this month and I too have a knock from the front suspension that the car is booked in for next week. I know this is a year and a half after you mentioned your experience but I was wondering whether you could share any more information with me such as the dealer who addressed the issue? Also whether the knock was obvious just on uneven surfaces or while driving on smoother roads too? Mine feels and sounds like the front shock is bottoming out on full extension. It isn't terrible but if I can get BMW to fix this now it may save me cost later on. These shocks are around £470 each so definitely not cheap!
