H&R Spring 535I xdrive (regular shock)

Hello guys,

I have an appointment next Monday (29th of February) to get my H&R sport springs installed. I know there are not so many 535I with regular shocks (not adaptive) that have this setup so I will keep you informed of the outcome. Hopefully they will not make the car too bouncy...

Also I was looking for installation cost here on the forum and I saw so many different pricing. The specialised BMW indy shop I have called told me it would take around 2 hours / 140$CAD (100$USD) which is pretty laughable...

I have also called my BMW dealer and the alignment will be around the same price 150$CAD...

I will keep you posted with the outcome.

$100 to install a set of springs would be a fair price. Here, labor rates are usually upwards of $100/hr.

$100 to install spring set on F10 is crazy cheap.

In Poland I have paid $ 300 for change of springs including alignment.
BMW dealer has asked $ 555.
So your prices are really fair

I had the same work done the same way in Toronto last October: $150 to have an independent garage put the springs in (BMW dealer wouldn't install them), $150 for the alignment by BMW.

Looks terrific.

Did BMW say anything or frown upon for lowering the car and going to them for an alignment?

I have not told them nor taken an appointment yet. I want to drive the car for a week for the sprint to settle and then take an appointment.

If they do not want to align my car because I lowered it I will go to my usual alignment specialist and pay even less $...

I will come back to you

You won't want to drive on them for a week before alignment -- the camber change is enormous.

In my case, settling took several months -- i mean, the car is lower today, 8 months later, than it was in the first month after the springs were installed.

I checked with BMW before installing the springs: only warranty item voided was the oem shocks. They had trouble doing the alignment on my new Rohanna wheels -- older BMW alignment tools require some special feature of BMW wheels.

Fortunately my dealer also owns a new Lexus dealership next door, which had brand new alignment equipment -- they used that for my car.

For what it's worth, my dealer (which I try to never go to) says they're alignment rig takes input of the car type, it measures ride height and calculates a target alignment. As springs sag or are modified, or different suspension packages are brought in it will always do the right thing. It might have been BS, but I wasn't talking about mods or anything just querying that they definitely chose the right machine spec for my vehicle

According to my BMW Service Advisor, the dealership's existing (older) BMW alignment table loads the wheel with weight to simulate a fully loaded car. They weren't prepared to try it with aftermarket wheels in case the wheel bent or broke.

He also advised that newer BMW alignment equipment does not require the loading.

Since we're talking alignments here do you guys know if they attach any equipments to the wheels themselves that could cause any marks/scratches to the surface?

The installation was done today but did not have a chance to take pictures.

It took the BMW Indy shop 2.25 hours for the installation (120$USD). The guys said it was their first time doing a suspension on an F10 and that it was a bit tricky because of the front axel but overall went well.

I only drove around 10 miles but overall I would say they feel similar to OEM in most road conditions but more stable in curves. I am doing a few hundred miles trip this week so I will be able to report back later.

I decided to drive the car like this and get the alignment only next week since many forum members seem to have done that.

Are you looking for the target or the result figures?

It is mine before and after eibach pro kit installation.
Top part shows before - it was a bit not correct after 4 years drive.
Bottom shows already after springs change and alignment adjustment.
Some say that alignment should be done 2-3 weeks after the change as springs need to settle a bit.

It is in PL language but translation I guess is not needed

Ahhhh - you've jogged my memory. This might be how it came up with the service manager when I was in. For 15 years I've been quizzing anyone who does an alignment on whether they've put in the required ballast weights. Then he proceeded to tell me about the ride height measuring method they have now.

This was actually the first time I've ever had an alignment done at the dealer Always used Indys before and always nagged about the weights. Of corse I have no idea if they actually used them.

So I drove 400 miles with the springs, they have probably not completely settled yet but I must say they feel great even with my non sport shocks. The roads in Quebec, Canada this time of the year are horrible but I am very happy how the springs handle. The ride is not too harsh or too bouncy similar to stock but the car fell more connected to the road.
