The performance gap between the 528i and the 535i this year is getting close. You can get tunings of the new N20 to produce the same power as the 535i.

the deal breaker for me with the 528i was when i looked under the hood for the 2012 model..... the engine is really really small, i know its faster than the previous one but when i open up my hood i want a nice big engine there not a tiny little thing. SO i went with the 535i looks better and the engine roar is very nice when driving.

I was just thinking about my decision to buy the N20 528i this morning. I remember test driving the car back in September, and I clearly remember being impressed by the engine and its performance. Having bought it, I am even more pleased than ever with the choice. I sprung for the new technology and the efficiency I would get out of it, while still enjoying the things that make a BMW a BMW. Many here will tell you bigger is better, and sure it is, there is always something bigger and better. But you need to know what you are going to need the car for.
The engine performs very well for my driving need, which are: I commute 50+ miles each day in this car in stop and go traffic, windy back roads, and highway. Most of the driving is less than 30mph, with a few burst to 100mph when I have the chance I don't race people at traffic lights I don't take my car to the track I don't lift up the hood to show the engine size, never really a reason to What I do like: I get BMW engineering I get BMW handling A beautiful car (inside and out) The feeling of a solid machine (not a bunch of parts put together) Quality And the simple joy of pushing this car hard for a few seconds every now and then The 528i is just right for me. Could I buy a 535? M5? Sure. But I don't need it. Now, if I lived in Germany, I certainly would consider a bigger engine Bottom line. There is no right answer. Get what suits your needs |

Everyone will get the engine size that best suits their need for power against fuel economy so I agree with your bottom line.

The smallest engine you can get in N. America is 528i. No diesel engines are being offered as of now.
