Impressive mpg

After a month in my F10 528i, I am finally past break-in (now at 1050 miles). I came out of an awesome e46 325i and really like the F10 so far. Most impressive is the gas mileage from this car.

During my normal commutes, my e46 would give me approx 26.2 mpg at about 31-32mph through back road and highway (stop-and-go) driving. Over the last 700 miles, my F10 has given me 28.4mpg at about 32mph under similar driving conditions. This is in Comfort Mode. I must say that for this much heavier car to give better fuel economy is very impressive. Really like this new engine and the efficiency gains, considering I never feel like the power is ever lacking in this car.

Next up, I am going to meaure mpg under ECO mode and then in Sport. Not sure if I will be able to make it a week in ECO. The car is pretty anemic in that mode.

Were you coming down out of the rockies or something - 117 miles downhill!!

I'm getting just under 20mpg doing my daily commute (12 miles each way, split evenly between city streets and highway).

OK so I was taking it steady. Most of the journey was on the motorway with cruise set at 65. Occasionally I'd need a touch of power to get past something especially on the frequent uphill sections then back onto cruise. A 10 mile section was set at 55 due to roadworks, and a few miles of single carriageway and roundabouts.

Frankly it would do my head in driving this sedately all the time. But I wasn't in a hurry and decided to see what was possible. Was expecting mid 50s - 61mpg is exceptional for a car this big and raises the question why anyone would want to buy a hybrid?

That's a very impressive mpg. What mileage have you covered? I can't seem to get above mid 50's even driving gently around 60mph on motorways. Town driving is pretty bad at around 30-35mpg. My car is still at 9k miles so I'm just wondering if the engine is still loosening up? The poor town mpg is making me think I should have gone for a 525 as this seems quite poor for the 520.

Truly impressive. If a sedan like this can even give 45mpg, that is pretty incredible. I would love to have a diesel F10, but alas...

Impressive indeed.

But remember that 61.1 UK mpg is the same as 50.9 US mpg!!!

Before anyone asks, AC was switched on, as was the radio and halos. Car has done 27k miles and my flat-spotted tyres can best be described as scrap.

As for the different size of gallon, its not my fault that the colonies can't count....

Mine gets 31-34 on the open road and 28-30 around town on the same motor as my 2009 328i Coupe that only got 22.

Beats my best at 52.5mpg for a 200 mile trip, but the bit liked the best was the massive range of 756 miles available on a tank......

So 140p per litre of Diesel here. 4.54 litres per gallon = £6.36 per gallon.

Then $1.58 = $1, so a UK gallon is $10.05

However, as the colonies have a different gallon worth 83.3% of ours, the equivalent price is:

3.79 liters per US Gallon, so = £5.31 or $8.39.

So twice as expensive for the actual fuel.

Per mile:
535i 18 US mpg @ $4.20 = $0.23 / £0.15 per mile in fuel
520d 61 IMP mpg @ $10.05 = $0.16 / £0.10 per mile in fuel

Even if I loaded my normal 47mpg, its still better:
520d 47 IMP mpg @ $10.05 = $0.21 / £0.13 per mile in fuel

So although our fuel costs twice as much, I get more than double the miles from the fuel.....

Update

So here is what I had got from a tank in COMFORT Mode

And then this is what I got from a tank in ECO PRO mode. Not a drastic improvement, but an improvement in mpg nonetheless. However, note the longer driving time and the lower average speed in the car under ECO, indicating worse traffic conditions. The mileage extender indicator said I got 8.6 extra miles from the tank..LOL. Of course I did not ease up on the acceleration or the speed during ECO mode either.

Bottom line though is that this car gives pretty impressive mileage for its size, given the average speed and that commute has a lot of stop and go

These are interesting numbers you guys have... My 550i is averaging about 16 MPG... it is killing me! sometimes I wish I went with a 535i instead...
My old car was also a V8 545i (2004) and I used to easily hit 20MPG. what is going on here? I Know the engine is a little bigger on the 550i and it is a little heavier but is it enough to make this much (4 MPG) difference?
I still have less that 800 miles on the odometer, does that make a difference also?

Break-in may make a difference, but i am sure it will not improve by 25%. What do other 550 owners get?
