32mpg +/- during break-in
I have a 520d (I know your OP was relating to 528/550i etc.).
Am responding for comparison... I am getting nowhere near the 50+ mpg I was expecting and I have been driving VERY calmly.... not happy at all.... and on 70l tank I only get around 540 miles which is rubbish in my view I am just under 1200 and at around 1100 miles I tried flooring it just to see what it could do... strangely I noticed that it would not go over 4000rpm no matter what I did... which makes me think there is built in protection up to 1,200 miles that keep you from over revving..... I have seen 520d's going into the red on youtube clips (not my plan to do that, I want to look after my car)... Reason I raise this is that even though I am driving calmly and there seems to be control limits in break-in period, I am getting shoddy mileage (urban stop/start and long drives of around 250 miles, always 32 avg mpg)

Sure my engine is run-in now but I'd have thought you'd be getting at least 40mpg |

No have not taken it back (yet), it reaches 1,200 miles this week so I will check if it is just my imagination first....
And mpg... will do a proper trial again after 1,200 miles and verify what I have seen.... Last time I had this mpg problem in my Audi, they discovered that handbrake was slightly engaged even when released, acting like an anchor... huge difference once fixed... doubt it is the issue here, but I am getting worse mpg than my 2.0 TDI Touran (170hp)... so just seems wrong

I can get 32mpg going 70mph on the highway with myself and my 2 kids in the back. I'm coming from 17-18 mpg from my e90 335i. My old rx8 used to get 15 mpg regardless of how I drove it lol.

Impressive mpg
Hi Rochdale Pioneers
I had a surprise last night when I checked by Journey computer I left the office for a meeting. The car (520d M sport Touring (10 days old)) was driven from cold on a mixture of roads with a some city work which reduces the average speed (The Auto stop operated at all the traffic lights). There were quite a few sections of road works on the motorway with 50 mph limits which is probably what helped with the higher than normal figure. Computer showed 52 mpg on the overall tank although I calculated it to be 48.5 mpg based on fill up to fill up. |

Hi,
My car is at just over 9500 miles now and on motorways taking it easy I can get 50-52mpg. On my daily commute to work (26 miles - 50/50 motorway and A roads) I can get 49-50mpg if driven gently and managed about 44-45 mpg with slightly spirited driving (sticking to 80-85 motorway). Still when my wife takes the car on a 5 mile across town in traffic drive to work she can only manage 25-30 mpg max. I have never been able to get above 56-57 mpg and that was with cruise control set at 60 on a motorway. This seems strange when some people easily manage high 50's and low 60's on motorways. I am quite dissapointed with the town mpg being so low as well. I would be happy if it did atleast 35-40 mpg in town. MalithS |

Instead of my first 3 tanks which gave (urban/highway mix) 550 miles range I am now on 780, which is much much better! 60 mpg for most of the way, and was hitting 75/78 mph on way home and it was at 50.9 mpg when I got home.... so a happy bunny indeed....!

Continues to impress
This is now based on my regular driving habits. Mostly in Comfort but DS mode. Lots of bursts of speed, manual shifting close to redline (a few times), and then stop and go driving :-(. I am not a laid back driver by any means. I love the N20 engine

don't forget, if you reset stats and idle it will show some crazy cosumption for some reason... so in reality it should be even better, I don't know why mpg meter gives high numbers when you idle the engine

Only temporarily. The stats above are from the trip computer, calculated over 409 miles and 14+ hours of driving.
