M5 Mufflers valves open or closed?
Hey!
I'm getting M5 mufflers this week and since I am not able to control the valves I have to debate whether to keep the valves open or closed. I don't really want a lot of drone beside my old car was straight piped (C300) and it just got annoying. Does anyone have experience with 535i and M5 mufflers? |

I played around with 'open' and 'closed' and for me, the best option was wiring the driver's side open. With fully open, you'll get drone/vibration inside and after a couple of days, it gets really irritating. With both closed, it'll sound like your stock system (quiet) so you get the comfort and looks. One side open was the perfect balance, not loud but enough so I can feel like I'm driving a sporty sedan.

So does the car sound louder on one side compared to the other? I'm getting them tomorrow so hopefully install them this weekend. |

Nope. When you get your mufflers installed, you'll notice the outer flaps will be closed by a spring mechanism. You can open and closed them using your hands so I just used a copper wire to tie the one side open. Stick the handle end of a hammer inside your muffler opening to hold it open, then tie a wire around the 'arm' that holds the flaps open. You'll see what I mean when you see it in person. BTW, the passenger side on mine is the open side, not the driver's side. One side might be louder but honestly, it's impossible to tell the difference. Another option is to only have the flaps open halfway but I'm not sure how that'll sound.

-No, the valves are closed Where is the X/J pipe? -Resonator was removed and there is a X pipe in its place. The J pipes are 36" in length and start just after the X pipe. They do not change the tone of the exhaust, they were just an extra precaution for drone, but are probably overkill. Do you have any videos of it driving ? (like from zero - whatever) -I do not, once I put my catless DP I will probably do some fly by and acceleration videos. Drone inside? -Absolutely minimal drone. The only time I ever hear any hint of drone is when I'm in D and the transmission has shifted into 8th gear at 1500rpm and I attempt to accelerate without downshifting. Even then, it's so minimal that it's not bothersome at all. |
