The 7D's AI Servo mode is its weak link. It just doesn't keep up as well as any of the 1D bodies or the 5D3. It's a shame, because it's otherwise such a great camera. I hope that the MkII version at least brings it up to the 5D3 level. With a slight improvement in high-ISO performance and the 5D3's AF system, it'll be a killer body. With all the parts on the shelf, I'd be surprised if they don't do that.

For military jets, I think that a 5D3 with the 1.4x and 2.0x TCs will do the trick, if your prime lens is f/4. Jets are relatively predictable, such that I don't think that the extra power of the 1D series will be needed.

The problem is that the distance changes rapidly and at 500+ knots at a 1/4 mile I need to be fast and accurate.
The only current solution I have right now is to put the 5D3 on the purchase list but I'd rather buy lenses more than it.
I could also use some fold down seats in the rear of the car more than a new body also.

I think that'll be a good solution. The 5D3 will lock on and stay on. However, don't be tempted to turn on all the AF points, instead use single-point or single-point expanded and put it on what you want to be in focus. If the sky is blue and you can use f/11, then all the AF points might be precise enough, but at f/8 and bigger, the DOF can still be too shallow. Anyway, with single-point, the camera won't be as likely to grab onto stuff in the background when a plane takes a low pass.

When they make the low pass, usually boat masts get in the way. Makes for an ugly photo.

Shot this today with the 5D MkIII from the office and my 400 5.6 + 1.4x TC (Kenko). Despite the high contrast tree in the background, the AF locked on to the bag in an instant and tracked it right along. I have a whole series of shots. I neglected to go to AI Focus, so the focus wandered just the tiniest bit in later images. I also tracked moving people and some cars, and they all stayed nicely in focus.

I'm thinking now the 5D MkIII with its accurate f8 AF may be fine for me. Right now it's still the least expensive option of the 3 I mentioned earlier.

Pretty darn good.

It locks on and tracks very well. My only problem is getting locked on with a big lens.

Yeah, it'll be a long while before I can swing something other than the 400 5.6. That lens has a lot less glass to move and no IS, so it's easy on the AF motors. Still need to try it on a distant eagle moving quickly with trees in the background.

Selling my very good condition T2i. Misc/non-auto classifieds is not getting any traffic so I figured I'd post in the photo section since it's photography related.

Shutter count is less than 28k, not a scratch on it(screen and body)...had a screen protector since day 1. Never been dropped. Reason for sale...I upgraded to the 6D. I'm looking to get $300 just for the body, which I think is a fair price. I also have a gadget bag that I'm not going to use so I can throw that in as well for an additional $30. Buyer pays for shipping or it can be picked up anywhere in San Diego.

This is exciting, I might have to get it to replace a speedlight when shooting on site.

Profoto stuff is never cheap. I can see this and a couple of accessories being around the 1k mark, especially because it's portable, TTL and powerful. Prices are still not announced yet.

edit, b&h as well as other sites are blocked at work so i can't even tell. just checked on my phone. And wow 2k, that is nuts.

Hmm, I went to Adorama and couldn't find them. I did see the other Profoto stuff and figured they'd be out of my price range. I barely use my 430 EX II, so this would be serious overkill.

I think I'll just stick to speedlights and triggers for outdoor photos. Unless that pricing is wrong, which I (unfortunately) doubt. But I'm glad this was released though. This raises the bar significantly. Other brands will be under the gun to follow suit with this technology.

Picked up a Roki 300mm f6.3 for my EOS-M just to play with. In good light, it's not bad for the cost. This will never replace an AF capable 300mm, but considering the camera and lens together will fit in my coat pocket, it's pretty handy tele setup. I need to try it mounted on a monopod. Holding the camera and lens out in front of me with no IS while keeping the image somewhat steady is no easy task.

Focus point was the bicycles

Focus point was the trash cans

Focus point was the student jogging away. Looks like the closer student and sign are sharper, so I missed a bit here.

Focus point was the food court sign. Again, the light is sharper, so I was a bit off here as well.

This is not an easy lens to use, but I'm hoping with practice I'll get better. I may try ML for the EOS-M since it has focus peaking.

What's the minimum focus distance? If it's short, then adding an extension tube could result in a useful macro lens.

Those shots look pretty decent. I'd process with an S-curve and some added contrast and call them winners. Try some campus squirrels (the fuzzy kind, not the creepy kind) at relatively close range to see if you can get sharp eyes. If you can get sharp eyes, then adding teleconverters is the next step.

It makes a very decent macro. I'm finding the MFD to be about 24" or less. Tubes and/or extenders would be tough since this is an EOS-M mount.

Don't you just need one converter to mount the series?

No, what I mean is that the Roki is EOS-M mount, so it attaches directly to the camera body. There is no way to fit an extender or anything else in between. At least not until they start making M mount extenders.

Oh, I thought that you were adapting it to the M.

For those of you guys with the EOS M, (Mark!) does it autofocus noticeably slowly?

I had another member on a motorcycle forum mention that, comparing it to the Nikon 1 J3 (2.7 crop sensor) and I said, it can't be THAT bad, but he said he read it took 4 seconds to lock?

Any insight I can bring forth here? Haven't used one of these but the Sony full frame mirrorless has my attention!

No, it focuses like a higher end P&S. But definitely not like a 5D MkIII. It seems somewhat dependent on the lens. The 22mm kit lens is quite fast.

The Sonys have my attention as well. But that's apple and oranges. The Sony A7R and any of their lenses will run nearly $4k. I have 1/10th of that invested in my EOS-M.

I saw a pic from the A7R today. Full body shot of a model wearing a raincoat. You could zoom in to the point where it was almost a macro view of the stitching and weave of the fabric in her coat. It's a pretty amazing camera.
