I haven't seen or heard of significant problems with either the 35d or 30d variant.
so one is more powerful, the other should be more economical. take your pic based on that but I think real world if you want economy you would be better off with a smaller engine, so for me the 535d makes the most sense out of the 3.0 engines. |

Economy with 2.0 has no sense, most of drivers run 150-160. 0,5 liter difference, shocking, 2.0 is total nonsense, I've heard about economy at 520d but looks like not true. Too small difference and no real economy with 2.0 Diesel on F10 Thanks |

I would go 35d if you can find one, I have run versions of both engines.
My previous E70 had the 3.0sd engine, which is the twin turbo version in the 35d. This engine was an absolute beast! I had it remapped so it was putting out 350bhp and 700nm of torque. When my E70 was written off I needed a car relatively quickly and could not find any 35d's for sale. I found my current car, a 530d, which has a BMW performance pack providing around 25bhp extra over the standard model and it had a nice specification so decided I couldn't wait any longer for a 35d. Both engines are great, the main difference for me is up top. They are both the same off the line, however where the 30d had lees urgency once the turbo has done it's thing the 35d has the second turbo that kicks in and just keeps pulling. To be honest most of my driving is around town so I don't notice the difference that much day to day. It's mainly noticeable when pulling out to overtake on an A road that I really miss that second turbo. You can take advantage of the smallest gaps in traffic to overtake.
