Speed tops at 130MPH / 211KPH, WTF!?

Well here it is.
I usually drive at around 100-110 MPH here on the autobahn. Well while out today I was feeling a bit frisky and said to myself "what the heck, let's see how long it takes to get the whole 160MPH"
Tried as I might and it would go no faster than 211KPH/130MPH. Went up and down the bahn with petal to the metal and will just linger at 211KPH. WTF is going on here people? Seriously is that the way it is or is my car bad? My 535 is not sports package, but the speed marker has up to 160MPH so I expect to go that fast even if it takes going downhill. My last car was an 06 530 non sport pckg also and i used to take it up to 155MPH.

What is the speed limiter specification for your car? The US spec without sport or m sport is 130 mph and 155 mph with. You may may be bumping up against the limiter.

Hey man, yea, its limited without the sport package to 130mph. My 550i is supposed to be limited to 155mph but I have buzzed the alarm at 160mph a couple of times.

You should go by Euler see if they will remove it for you, they usually do. Its a snafu for European purchases of US spec cars I guess.

That's what we call 'speed tourism'.

Guys from US, China, Japan, and God knows from where come here, rent a fast car (or pick up their own), drive on the Bahn and then... full throttle, "pedal to the metal".

Guys, it's better you stayed at home, because you don't have a clue how a car behaves at these speeds, and how long it takes to break for example. There is a reason that your cars have limits built in... The reasons are: We stay safer this way. Sorry, but true.

Recently, some dumb idiots didn't even know which country they were in... Flew into Italy, rented Ferraris in Milan, drove north, and as soon as they saw German street signs, went "pedal to the metal".

Except, it was Switzerland, where they DO HAVE speed limits, and the police arrested them on the spot. Cost them close to 180.000 bucks to get their cars back.

We had a good laugh...

I made sure I got the sport for this reason, 130 in a car this smooth and size feels like doing 80

Couldn't agree more. Most drivers never even practiced an emergency stop at 60 mph let alone at 130 mph

Besides, the Germans maintain a strict etiquette when cruising the Autobahn which is often misinterpreted even by their closest neighbours, like the Dutch for example.

I am not sure if you referring to folks in general or to the OP but if you see the OP lives in Germany and is fully aware of the autobahn, as so do I.

i once drove upto 220 KM/hr without noticing and then started to lift my foot off the gas just because the steering was not feeling solid and centered.

So, i think mine goes up to higher speeds than 220.

I don't have the sports package.

They only limit cars with destination Estados Unidos because of liability issues. After all, someone could sue for not warning that driving @ 230+ kmh might be dangerous.

It's their legal system.

No I am referring to folks who never drove anything beyond 80mph and then suddenly rent a car here and think they can drive 160mph without prior training or adopting to the way people drive here, i.e. slow on right lane, fast on left lane... therefore the word 'tourism'.

The US military personnel here knows these things well...

Exactly. One of my favorite experiences with great stories about driving came from a trip from Berlin to Normandy via the Netherlands. In Germany most cars are on the right driving normally or slow, with average drivers in the middle and the real speeders using the far left lane. When a car is coming up fast behind you, you get out of the way, and others do exactly the same for you when you're coming up fast behind them. People don't honk horns or tailgate or hold you up. It works very well and you learn to adapt to it very quickly. The speedsters seem to prefer midsize dark blue Audis and BMWs.

On the other hand, things deteriorated rapidly on the rest of the drive from major congestion in Amsterdam and through Belgium to an outright gong show in France. In France everyone is trying to drive in the left lane, tailgating, honking, giving the finger, cutting people off, etc driving mostly small crappy cars spewing black smoke and tiny tires.

Am I exaggerating? Not much!

Here in North America we seem to be somewhere in between. Would love to see more of the former of course...

Uh, and what part of North America are you talking about? Certainly not anywhere between Washington DC and Boston MA.

Born and raised New Yorker I am with decaf on this only I would extend from the top to bottom of I95. The US could easy pay off the deficit by turning the entire length of I95 to unrestricted and run pay-per-view high def cameras along the entire length. Forget about cops, it would be priceless.

Its been a while since I have been in the US but the road scene was not one of closely followed rules, disciplined driving and mutual respect, I would be shocked if that has changed much.

Yeah I suppose you guys are right. Wishful thinking on my part. Those areas are especially bad I know and there are plenty of rude drivers here in USA/Canada. We got bigger cars than they got in France though.

I remember my first Autobahn driving some 20 years ago. It wasn't anything special, I felt, perhaps because so many cars other than ours were doing 120mph +.

The cars just got so much better these days compared with 20 odd years ago, I don't see anything wrong with "speed tourism". Unless there is evidence to show that higher accidents per 1000 (or whatever) for non-German residents.

I wasnt around 20 years ago but I drive the autobahn daily through spans of unrestricteness and would say, nowadays at least, the average driver is doing between 80mph to 100mph in unrestricted areas.
