High MPG Issue - 525D (2014)
Hi all,
I am new to this forum and would appreciate any help. I have a 525D (2014) and the mpg consumption I am getting is quite high. Inner City - 20mpg Outer City (Motorways - 30-35mpg Would you say this is normal? Or is this too high? I am worried there could be an issue with the car, as I only recently purchased it. Thanks in advance. |

Fuel economy definitely seems to be a bit high for a 525d,
assuming, of course, it has the newer 2.0 diesel engine. I have a 2014 520d, with a 6 speed manual, and get an average fuel consumption of around 7 L/100km (40 British MPG) with around 5.5 L/100 km (51 British MPG) on the highway with the cruise control set to 130 km/h (approximately 80 miles/h). Keep in mind, though, that I do most of my driving on the highway, but still like to do some heavy footed driving from time to time, so the average consumption should be even lower in practice. Assuming the data you've provided is in Imperial (UK) gallons, your inner city fuel consumption of 20 UK mpg (16.6 US mpg/14.1 l/km) is way too high for a 2014 525d, even if you ONLY drive in the city in very low ambient temperatures.
If we average your motorway fuel consumption of 30-35 UK mpg (25-29 US mpg/11.5-8.1 l/km), we get 32.5 UK mpg (27 US mpg/8.7 l/km) which is OK if you have some inner city driving involved as well; if purely motorway, it's a bit on the high side. The filters might be overdue, I suggest you give the car a proper service first. |

Thanks for your input. I appreciate it. Yes i felt it was also too high. The car has had a recent service before I bought it. Thats why i was a bit worried. Filters should be good at present. Do you have any other ideas as to what it could be? Tyre pressures are all good. Thanks again |

There is absolutely no reason that your 525d, especially given that it is an automatic,
would have such high fuel consumption figures under normal driving conditions. The fuel consumption should be in line with the 520d, in the city or on the highway being just a little bit higher, definitively within 0,2-0,4 L/100km. My first recommendation would be for you to "clean the engine out" with some spirited driving and higher than usual engine revs, when there is an opportunity to do so and the car is warmed up, as there could be some carbon buildup causing the higher consumption. Also make sure to get the DPF filter into its regenerative cycle, driving the car on the highway for more than lets say 10-15 minutes, which will burn off soot and clear any blockage that may be present in the DPF. Other than that, as fellow members have stated, I would have advised checking the cars filters, but I have since seen that the car has been serviced recently. |

I see you live in London. Do you do mostly short trips? Does the engine get up to proper operating temperature? What’s your driving style like?

High MPG Issue - 525D (2014)
Hello,
My first question is, how are you getting your mpg? Are you using the on board computer or doing a manual calculation? I ask because there is a correction factor that can drastically affect the displayed mileage. Mine showed 42mpg when I first got it, I wish. There are several procedures to unlock this option. You can start here. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1226672 I can't guarantee the accuracy of this procedure but it should at least point you in the right direction. The only thing I would add to it is be sure to zero out avg mpg and avg speed each time you fill up until you settle on the right correction factor for your driving habits. Otherwise you will be chasing your tale. Don't ask me how I know. OS2 Last edited by Old School 2; 03-27-2019 at 06:53 AM.. Reason: Accuracy |

my guess is that your egr valve or cooler is clogged and choking the car and though not showing any codes will break soon. is your car part of the recall?
Put the car into sports plus and drive it like you stole it for some days and whatever is the underlying fault will manifest with the added strain. |
