White shade in headlamp.

It's the only part i'm not a fan especially since the new LED headlamps don't have it and look much better.
What was BMWs reason for it ??

Are you talking the top of the headlight?? That is a light... It's in the OM...

+1 i always wondered why that is but never asked. i've seen guys cover it up with the carbon fiber eye lids or black vinyl. i left mine alone as it doesn't bother me aesthetically but what's it's purpose...no clue

maybe someone who knows can chime in

Looks wise, it doesn't bother me at all, but then my car is Alpine White so it blends in pretty well and is hardly noticeable

Every time I try and paste the instructions from the OM it fails... Essentially they are parking lights. Pages 89 & 91 from the 2012 OM explain it...

They definitely light up. Go out and push the turn lever up for the right side and down for the left.

Rechecked the OM..... Need to hold down the lever (past the detent) for about 2 seconds...

Didn't know this! I thought it was just an early implementation of the led brow they put on the latest cars, like my new F48. As when the headlights are on this is slightly illuminated by them giving a similar but subtler effect....

I just tried this on my 2011 car. On my car the halos come on, not the eyebrow. The eyebrow is illuminated by the halo, but does not seem to have it's own light.

Perhaps only the drivers side lights because that would be the side of the car away from the curb (and into traffic) when properly parking in the street.

No should work on both sides, depends which way you push the indicator stalk after switching off...
