Or the Chinese have a slightly different view than BMW on their shared venture (BMW Brilliance Inc, China)?

It seems to be a cultural thing as well as commercial. Listened to an interesting interview with a UK business owner who shipped production of his product to China to reduce costs and get the volume he needed. Worked fine for a while then during a visit they proudly showed him their own version of his product, which really was a straightforward copy. Sounded like they just didn't appreciate at all how offensive that is in the west.

Not to excuse the practice, or apologise for the Chineese leadership who are a complete and utter disgrace to humanity, but I think it's more than just devious chineese businesses deliberately trying to rip off other people's IP.

My Chinese friends also find theft of intellectual property to be appalling and beneath the dignity of Chinese Culture. They believe that it stunts the growth of Chinese society because it destroys incentives to design, engineer, and develop innovative products and ideas. There has to be legitimate rewards to invest and take risks associated with innovation.

With one car, Brilliance ripped off the new BMW X1, stole the name from Audi, and ripped off the M-Sport Wheels of the F10. They also offended Mercedes Benz because they did not steal their stuff.

I commend BMW leadership for standing up to their so called joint venture partner. If nothing else their partner's blatant theft of BMW intellectual property, exposes their intentions and utter disregard for the established concept of intellectual property. The actions of Brilliance is certainly less than brilliant.

I deleted my original message where I commented "... let him first cast a stone at her" as now I have read the full article.

'Intellectual property' here was not just downloading a few MP3 files. My mistake.

This kind of practice has been widely known for long time, especially for electronic.. and yet foreigners still making more and more investment and enjoying more and more profits out of "china made" products. Don't come or face the consequences I might say.
