Why is F10 8 speed and 7 Series still 6 speed?

I am wondering why 8 speed transmission is not present in the 7 series so far?

Even the angel eyes in 7 series is not LED yet?

Why? Why? Why?

5 Series has both of them.

Product management for different models will be run completely seperately on each model. It is not a simple "yes, we've got the 8 speed auto in the 5 series, lets drop that in the 7 series next month". I don't have anything to do with the auto industry, but I do work for a very large organisation. Ostensibly it looks like common sense, or easy, to make revisions between models, whereas internally, the complexities of effecting those changes require (in most cases) significant design changes, a cycle of implementation revisions, rigorous testing at "unit" and "whole product" levels - within the scope of the new model.

As ipso facto hints, I suspect you will see those items when the LCI comes along, which shouldn't be too long now.

Stewart.

Well, my 2011 post September build 750li xdrive has six speeds.

In turn, it is the most choppiest, lurching, gas eating BMW I have ever had the pleasure driving.

My complaint is not so much that you only get about 14 mpg average driving (the car gets excellent highway mpg). Rather, my complaint is that you only get 275 or so miles per tankful. That equates to a lot of extra gas ups over the non turbo and non drive 2008 750li.

However, without question, so far (going on 6 months) this is the funnest, most confidence inspiring, functional gadget driving BMW in my opinion...ever.

And I compare this to the best machine built at the time, the 2005 e39. This new bimmer beats the e39 fun factor hands down.

The xdrive is amazing. For example, driving previous BMW cars in the snow (even light conditions) often resulted in the dsc kicking in, especially on starts.

Not so with xdrive. I challenge you to find a surface that requires dsc interaction. It happens once in a blue moon. The xdrive is like having earth magnets on your tires that glue you to the ground!

So, is the 750li, with its two major foibles, viz., gas eating and six speed, worth the xdrive?

Using the theme on your intro, I would say: Yes! Yes! Yes!

8 speed in F10 feels lazy in normal mode, and too many quick upshifts and it is tuned for fuel economy, 8 speed has too be in sport mode to feel the power from the beginning.

6 speed auto in F10 would have felt much stronger and powerful. Most of the people who are complaining of extra weight of F10 over E60, are feeling the weight because of 8 speed transmission vs 6 speed in E60.

8 speed in 7 series would make it even more heavy in normal mode.

I love my 8 speed transmission, it has great fuel economy, smoothness, quietness and when needed has power too

Agreed.

I like to say that my car, in normal mode, is more like a diesel. Shifts up at about 1,800 RPM, somewhat reluctant to downshift, and ticks at idle.

however, in sport, it's much different. The car feels much different when it winds the gears out. However, I don't like Sport all that much since it is TOO reluctant to upshift, and locks out the top gears in automatic mode.

I wish I had the Sport auto transmission in this car.
