M5 exhaust on 550 in Houston area?

Just sourced a M5 exhaust but want to hear it person first before I install it. Anyone in the Houston area have this on their 550?

I'm not in Houston, but maybe I can give you some feedback. Is it the whole exhaust or just mufflers?

Install it...

I have the M5 mufflers and then removed the oem 550 center muffler w/ a custom x-pipe, making the setup identical to the m5 full exhaust except the 550's is 2.75" vs. the full 3" in the M5....but the diff in diameter doesn't affect sound too much.

Here's a shitty video... i am waiting for better weather for a proper video and write up of the x-pipe

Sounds great!! I'm thinking about doing the same...did you use a pre fab x pipe for the center muffler replacement or did the shop make one on the fly? Do you have a pic of the x pipe installed?
Thanks

Custom tig welded. Ideal design.

There are no pre fabbed ones in the right diameter

I've got the whole system, but thinking of just putting on the mufflers. I don't want too much sound, and defintitely no drone. I'd like to keep it as stock sounding as possible unless I'm getting on it a little bit. Do you think this is possible with the OEM setup?

Do you have the m5 exhaust with the stock diffuser? How difficult is it for the shop to modify to fit? Did you keep the vacuum valves? Does the exhaust have any humming drone?

They come with the factory valves, and there's no drone - I have just the mufflers. But I'd connect the entire exhaust if I had it. I wouldn't mind a little more note - actually looking to either remove the middle muffler or resonator

Do what I did man. Cut out the center muffler and replace with x pipe. Leave the resonators. Perfect balance. Quiet when you want it to be and loud enough when you need it to be.

I'll post clips together for just m5 mufflers and then with the added x pipe.

I have the m5 mufflers only, not the full exhaust. My shop cut it and fabbed pipe in to connect to the factory 550 exhaust in the oem location so I could use the oem m sport diffuser.

Then, adding the x-pipe replacing the center muffler makes the overall setup identical to the full m5 setup minus the 0.25" difference in diameter and the fact that the m5 oem has no crushed points.

How do you think it will sound with only M5 mufflers attached to otherwise stock 550i exhaust? Think I'll get any droning?

Just M5 mufflers is still pretty darn quiet. I have 0 drone with M5 mufflers and the center muffler cut out. I was running M5 mufflers only for 1.5 months but wanted more sound... here is my original writeup:

One video below is indoors and one is outdoors so not the ideal apples to apples comparison but still...

That honestly sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. A nice factory sounding setup with no drone, a little louder than stock. Thanks for sharing.

Anytime... anything is louder than the stock mufflers, they're awful. Best combo IMO is the M5 mufflers, with the stock center muffler removed and replaced w/ an x-pipe, and if not an x-pipe, the straight pipes. That makes the exhaust setup very very similar to the stock m5, which is great, relative to the stock 550i. But obviously there are ton's of M guys who need louder...

What about removing the resonator? I think another board member w/ M5 mufflers removed them and loved the sound.

I was about to but heard the chance of drone on the highway is much greater. It would probably be minimal drone, but it would be there. It'll definitely sound better with them removed....

Very Nice! Thanks for all your efforts posting your great mod. I'm sure when some of us do our M5 muffler mod, your "pictures will be worth 1000 words" at the muffler shop.
