Inexpensive Quad Exhaust Project

Hello guys,

I have a 535i Xdrive 2011 Msport silver that I purchased last January. The car was relatively cheap for the low mileage it has (28k miles). Now like every car I had, I want to personalize it a bit but I do not want to spend to much money. I have already done Jb4 and ER downpipe put this is not the purpose of the post.

I have purchase a used Megan Exhaust from a member here for relatively cheap (410$ including shipping) and M5 diffuser with insert and adaptor from getbmwparts for 226$.

Update with before picture the day I bought the car (I do not understand why someone would put a low quality Hitch on a 5 series car look how rusty it is)

This is the exhaust how received...

This is after cleaning. Left side tips are cleaned but as received and right side is cleaned and polished tips ( after polishing the Megan logos are less visible on the tips...).

This is after painting the muffler matte black because I do not want any attention to the muffler themselves. The result is not perfect but much better compare to how I received the mufflers

Currently I am in the process of "plastidiping" the M5 diffuser Matte Black and will post update later.

Update 2015-08-07: the bodyshop installed the diffuser yesterday and today I went for the exhaust installation. What I can say is that I am very happy with the look. The sound of the exhaust from the outside is really nice but there is some drone... not to loud but it is there. I will probably start by trying to put some dynamat in the trunk and if not enough for my liking I might modify the exhaust with some aftermarket resonators.

The result in various angles

Nice work man. Leave your resonators in when you install. I think these have a tendency to slightly drone.

For sure I will keep the resonators to avoid as much drone as possible.

I have completed painting the rear diffuser with ProtectDip_2.0 and it came out great. The finish and color is very close to the M5 diffuser middle insert which is exactly what I wanted to achieve.

This is the look I have in mind minus the two section middle insert. Note that this one is carbon fiber but look satin / matte black from the picture and this is really what I want.

Now I need to find a shop that will remove the rusty hitch that came with the car, remove the bumper cover, install the M5 diffuser adaptor, m5 diffuser and put the Megan Exhaust in place.

I might wait during the first week of August since I will be in vacation and be able to stay at the shop during the work...

Brake cleaner and dish soap for the finish.
I sanded lightly the mufflers before painting and polished the tips with Meguiar's : Ultimate Compound and a polishing machine.

I have an appointment to a body shop to install the M5 bumper adaptor and diffuser August 18th... was not able to get it sooner. Will post update when everything will be on the car.

Knock off or OEM are about the same price so why not go OEM...
Mine is OEM and I bought it from getbmwparts for 226$ with the adaptor to avoid cuting my adaptor...

550Reasons thanks for the picture, I have not seen so many pictures of Matte M5 diffuser! Looks great can wait to see how it look on my lighter colored car.

What m5 adaptor are you referring to? 226$ is a great price and I don't mind getting one for that price. Could you post your contact that gave you that price? If you can post the parts list that would be helpful as well. Thanks!

Go on GetBMWParts.com and search for their ITEM PKF10M5DIFF* . You will see that you need to select an option.

Diffuser + Insert = 199$
Diffuser + Insert + Adaptor = 226$

The insert is already textured black so you do not have to paint it but the diffuser is primed so have to be painted. In fact black plasti dip the diffuser make it "identical" to the color / texture of the M5 middle insert.

The adaptor is a black plastic piece behind the m sport / M5 bumper cover that is shaped differently compared to the M-sport so that you can fit the M5 diffuser. Other option is to cut you M-sport adaptor but I prefer not to cut anything on "expensive" car like our 5 series...
