New 535d owner
Hello all,
I've had my F10 535d for a few weeks now. It's a 2012 M-Sport in carbon black with oyster/black interior plus: 19 M Double-spoke style 351M alloy wheels Adaptive Drive Elec Fr Seats + Driver Memory Ext. mirrors - folding. auto dimming Loudspeaker system - BMW Advanced M rear spoiler Media package - BMW Professional Piano Black - BMW Ind. Sport automatic transmission Sun protection glass Visibility package I'm generally very pleased with it, but looking to improve it in 3 areas: - switching to non-RFTs on 18s to improve the ride further; - upgrading the hi-fi further using Gladen and JL Audio gear; - doing something about the shape of the seat backrest, which I find uncomfortable. I'll post separately about those when I get the chance. I see a few usernames on here that I'm sure I recognise from an S-Max owners' forum: eggy41 ? a900ss ? |

Car looks great!
Surprised you want to upgrade the audio, I always thought the factory upgraded audio was meant to be pretty good, although I'm not sure what the " Loudspeaker system - BMW Advanced" is. I have the basic audio and never been happy with it after having Logic 7 in my previous car. but I was reading how easy it is to change speakers so was considering changing just the speakers to BMW top HiFi, although it won't be perfect I've heard it's a vast improvement, for not too much effort. (if your car has these speaker and you want to sell them let me know). Anyway cracking looking car and good luck with the planned improvements. |

Hi Mistry,
"Loudspeaker system - BMW Advanced" is the cheaper of the 2 factory upgrade options: it's a lot better than the basic 6 speaker system but a long way from the clarity and oomph of the "top" or "professional" option. I'm replacing the front door and underseat speakers with the Gladen 201 BMW custom fit speakers and buying a custom harness to replace the amp in the trunk with a JL Audio xd600/6 without cutting the factory wiring loom. Gladen speakers: http://www.germaniks.com/speakers/gl...x-e7x-e8x-e9x/ JL Audio amp and harness: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=692688 (thread is for a 3 series but the harness is very similar for the F10) I looked at upgrading to Logic7/pro hi-fi using factory parts but it's quite expensive, particularly to replace the underseat woofers. Ah OK, I thought it was either business or Pro. So that makes sense.
Most things I've read are people recommending the focal 100KRS for the mids which seem to get very good reviews. I'll take a closer look at the Gladen 201s, I wasn't planning on upgrading the sub or adding an Amp. Keep us posted on your progress. |

Lovely car and nice spec.... Shame your going to change the wheels as 18" are still exposed as not sure if you will get much more comfort!

What tyres are you running on the 19"s? Not Pirelli are they? They are hard as nails! |

OK. Have been a busy boy on the wheels front.
The car came with 351 staggered 19s (245/40/19 front, 275/35/19 rear, Pirelli PZero RFT). I picked up the following sets of virtually new wheels and tyres from BMW dealers via ebay (both taken off customer cars due to upgrading): - 328s with Bridgestone ER300 RFT 245/45/18 all round; - 234s with Dunlop SportMaxx GT RFT 245/45/18 all round (from an F12 6 series but same spec as F10). I tried both sets and both were slightly quieter and smoother riding than the factory set, with the Dunlops being slightly quieter and seeming to have slightly more precise steering feel than the Bridgestones, but not a lot in it. Both still had the hallmark runflat "thump" over potholes and cat's eyes, not as bad as on 19s but still there. It's not something that the adaptive drive can dial out: that's very good at altering the way the car reacts to longer acting forces - undulating road surfaces, body roll in corners - but it can't really smooth off the sharp, fast spike of the wheel hitting a pothole edge. The 328 rim weighs 12.8kg, the 234 rim weighs a very impressive 11.1kg, whereas the 351 rims are an obese 14.5kg (all from http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/). The 328s plus the Bridgestones weighed 26.7kg, the 234s plus the Dunlops weighed 25.9kg, the factory 351s plus a 275/35/19 Pirelli weighed 27.5kg. Then I tried a set of Dunlop Sport Maxx RT non-RFTs on the 328 wheels. (Tyres weigh 10.5kg each, total wheel and tyre weight = 23.3kg). Nirvana achieved ! Road noise dropped a fraction further, especially over coarse surfaces, but more importantly the car now rides smoothly over potholes etc. Rather than being anxious about losing runflat capability, I felt more relaxed because I no longer needed to scan the road surface for imperfections to avoid. I've heard it said that the F10 suspension, particularly the adaptive drive version, is designed specifically to work with runflats. I think that's putting too positive a spin on it. What BMW seems to have done is make the F10 suspension basically quite soft/ long travel, to try and mask the poor ride quality of runflats, but it's not really compensating at the right amplitude/frequency to deal with ruts and potholes and you will still get a better result if you switch to non-runflats. The most surprising thing is that I now put the car in Sport+ mode most of the time. It feels firm but well damped, never jarring, never fidgety. I've bought a genuine BMW emergency tyre repair kit, like the M5 has, and I'm very happy. Of course, most people will want to stick with runflats but I hope the above is still interesting/useful. And those people might be interested in the spare stuff I've ended up with...... |

Oh no, my secret is out Morello !
So, cleaning the car last night, egg shaped bump in sidewall of rear outside tyre, Mrs Eggy takes into local quick fit, "oh there's another one as well, that will be pot holes for you" Quoted her £870 for 2 19's, I pointed out they were £278 on their website so they matched that, cheeky bu**ers £550 before I've even got started ! Thanks. It doesn't feel as fast as it is, because the delivery is so smooth and the torque band is so wide. And I only get to floor it about once in a blue moon around the sleepy roads of South Devon.

Hi Max,
Did you upgrade the sound system in the end? I've bought a 2011 535d M Sport and it too has the Advanced Loudspeaker system so keen to understand how easy it is to upgrade should i feel the need to. Thanks |

Holy thread revival...
.... I did like this car but never managed to resolve a couple of issues: - the stereo: I put in an expensive JL Audio XD600/6 amp and some Gladen aftermarket speakers but the sound was never quite right, never as balanced or as easy on the ear as it should be; - the shape of the driver's seat: it felt like my back was being pushed in the centre and there were no adjustments possible. So eventually I sold it and started looking for the perfect nearly new replacement. Unfortunately, 535ds with adaptive drive, comfort seats, HK hi-fi and Oyster/Black interiors don't come up that much, and the 1 that did was in an "interesting" metallic brown, so I've given up and ordered new. Drivethedeal currently offering 535d Luxury/M-Sport for about £36k, with options discounted approx 10%. That's not much more than dealers are asking for 12 month old cars. Have gone for Luxury rather than M-Sport, with style 328 18's, de-badged, in Imperial Blue. Trying to be as Q car /unaggressive as possible. Lead times seem pretty short. Ordered it a week ago and it should be here mid-March. Perhaps I'm the only one buying ??? I've also bagged a set of 17's (!) with Dunlop Sport Maxx non-runflats from German ebay. German BMW customers are offered 17s with non-RFTs as standard, even on 535ds, so they are definitely up to the job, and the ride and lack of road noise should be great. I know some people will think it is blasphemy to stick 17s on a car like this, but I'm trying to end up with a car that is as relaxing to drive as an S-class and doesn't attract too much attention. |

That's interesting. Is this official from the factory and available on all German orders, or a special arrangement offered by some dealers?

On the German configurator, it's shocking how many things are additional-cost options even on a 535d. Parking sensors, auto-dimming of the rear view mirror, metallic paint.... |
