f10 530d oil level too high on idrive
the car is an F10 530D 2010 model
the oil level check through idrive is showing level too high.(above max mark) is this due to a faulty oil level sensor or is it something else.? the car was last service in may 2016 when the oil level was fine and I have not topped it up since. |

ok so checked the oil level on the dipstick,it was touching the max mark
so I decided to suck out a half liter of engine oil via the oil dipstick tube using an oil extraction pump. the idrive level on idrive now is in the green and level reads ok. but still cannot figure out how oil level went high in the first place as I never overtopped it in the first place |

Do you do lots of short trips ? I suspect so.
If the DPF is attempting an active regeneration, and you end your trip, then the excess fuel that is used for the regen (to burn off the ash in the DPF) can end up in the sump, raising the level of the oil. If it gets high enough, then the engine can suffer an uncontrollable runaway, where it starts to run off the diluted oil/diesel mix in the sump, right up to the rev limiter, until the engine self-destructs. So the oil in your sump may well be contaminated with diesel. I'd check the oil level again, and this time have a careful sniff of the oil on the dipstick. If it smells heavily of diesel, then you really need to think about getting an oil change carried out. |

thanks for your reply.
I do 10 mile journeys on the motorway each day. and 10 miles on an A road as well and i guess this is not enough for a complete regen and hence the rise in oil level. it was like 1/2 litre above the max mark on the dipstick when I drained it. how do make sure a regen is completed? |

You also (due to incomplete regens) need to start keeping a closer eye on oil level. Finally, a regen will only start once the engine is completely warmed up, and can take 20-30 minutes to complete. So the only real choice is to start using the car for longer trips, motorway runs, etc. |
