it's always a risk.
use paypal and check to make sure they are a verified member (ie they have a legit bank account and confirmed address). Ship with tracking and insurance. Get payment before you ship (sounds obvious, but may not be to everyone) You can be more anal and ask for a copy of ID/Drivers License, but chances are you won't be able to get that from them. good luck.

If you are the buyer, you are going out on a limb a little bit. You are hoping the merchandise is as the seller describes and that they will package it properly and ship to you promptly. I have had a situation in the past where my goods were received damaged and the seller claimed it wasn't that way when he shipped it. Very hard to prove that goods are damaged during shipping. Buying local is always less headache and the preferred method, but not always possible. Good luck!
