No one's apologizing for their choices, to each his own. This thread is not to bash the diesel or for us to justify why we have decided to buy one. I'm sure most of us could afford the 535, 550, or even M5 if we really wanted to go those routes, but in the end we all picked the diesel because that's what we wanted. Cheers.

I sensed some awkwardness from some of the postings, but I could be wrong- my wife reminds me of this quite often.

Joining the group of diesel-heads (almost) ... re-post of "what did I order" but jumping over from a 2011 535i XDrive to a 2014 535d XDrive. Details....
Placed my order yesterday for a 535d xDrive... decided to go with the diesel as the mpg numbers look pretty good for not too much of an impact in performance -- and with diesel prices about the same as super unleaded in NY, hoping for a nice reduction in my monthly fuel charges! My config.... 535d xDrive M-Sport Line Dark Graphite Metallic (glad this color is back - have it now) Dark Wood trim (love the look of the aluminum, but it gets so hot when the car is in the sun it almost burned my wife one day) 19" 351M all-season run-flat (Hopefully the Goodyear Eagles are gone) Black Dakota Leather (will miss my Napa, but not an option - yet) Cold Weather Package (ZCW) Drive Assistance Package (ZDA) Driver Assistance Plus (ZDB) Lighting Package (ZLP) Luxury Seating (ZLS) Premium Package (ZPP) Harmon Kardon Sound System (688) Waiting on my CA to give me my tracking number and VIR so I can confirm everything is accurate before production starts. Now comes the very painful 8-week wait! |

It's nice to see the 535d is offered with the M Sport Package. I drive an X5 35i and would have loved the 35d, but the M Sport Package was not possible.

And I cry when I see your gas-prices...
In Norway almost all F10 sold are diesel. (Guessing 95%) And for the fuelprices... Gasoline: almost 10$ pr gallon Diesel: 9$ pr gallon And just to add to it... My used 2013 F10 520D cost me about 100.000$ to buy |

And what does a beer or a cup of coffee cost in Norway. The culprit, which I am not sure you want to do without, is all the north sea oil that has resulted in Norway being the third richest country in the world (with a per capita GDP about 30% higher than the US and only behind Qatar and Luxembourg) and contributed to an overvalued exchange rate.

2014 535d officially ordered!
Carbon Black/Mocha, Aluminum Hex, M-Sport, etc...can't wait. Driving back to back with the gasoline 535 is no comparison...torque truly pushes you back in your seat. Can't wait!

This was a fun thread to read. After many test drives of both the 535d (ROW 530d) and the 535i, I went for the gas (aka Otto) engine. I felt it was nimbler. No doubt, the torque in the d is truly awesome. Totally effortless acceleration - very much reminiscent of a V8. And it is quiet, no knocking perceivable from the inside at any speed. But - it felt heavier and less nimble. A bit like dancing with an extremely competent but slightly stiffer and older partner.
I suppose it comes down to a simple matter of personal preference. |

A comment on the diesel vs. gas and mpg that was discussed a couple of posts back.
Main reason for diesel is the increased mpg. My 520d (F11) is rated at about 50 mpg. A 535i is less than 30 mpg. 20 mpg difference, 10k miles per year (low number for being in europe). That's 500 galons of saved fuel per year... If you pay $4/gallon that's $2k less in fuel per year. For us in europe it's about twice that no matter if you're in norway, sweden, germany, france, uk, etc... And as a bonus it's about $17K cheaper with only difference being the engine... The exterior, interior and everything else is still the same 5-series we all love... What I don't get is why bmw na isn't offering the smaller diesel variants in the us... |

I especially don't understand why they don't offer these smaller diesels in the 1-series, or the upcoming 2-series.
If I were king of BMW, I would introduce a small Tacoma like pickup truck with a small diesel. I think it would look great with the signature kidney grill, and with a small diesel engine would be a big seller. |

I'd take this a step further: the base price of the 528i is $7,100 below that of the 535d. It offers comparable performance and a small penalty in fuel economy, partially offset by the lower price of premium fuel compared to diesel. And it's a lighter-weight car with corresponding benefits in handling. The biggest disadvantage is the lack of suspension options. But . . . . $7K!!

You are forgetting to factor in the $4500 eco-credit that will come...
That brings the price to only $2500 more than the 528 with a lot more torque. If the eco-credit never comes then you are right. |

The 528i has 258 lb-ft, the 535d has 413 lb-ft. The difference in daily traffic is huge, especially when overtaking, when the 535d feels like a V-8 gas.
