Grill air duct shutters
The 2012 535i I recently acquired from an insurance auction needs the front end parts replaced.
I have almost everything I need off a 550i donor car except the shutters that go behind the grill. The 535 has the CO2 option but the 550 does not. I have read it might help with fuel mileage and faster warm up times but is it necessary? Don't want to waste money if this part doesn't really do anything when there are always more performance parts to buy. |

some of us have ripped them out to paint the cross bars so they're exposed through the front grills. no issues doing this thus far

Some cars have passive shutters, e.g. they're static and made of rubber. Others have active ones that open and close. Double check to see which one you need.

I have ones that open and close. Don't really want to spend over $100 to replace them if it can just use the static set off my parts car

Home improvements have prevented me from doing anything with the car.
I assume I will have to code out the active shutters, but won't have the car back together for a while to know for sure |

shutters
I remove mine in the summer put them back in the summer.
Never have had an issue. However let me mention I keep the actuator installed and plugged in. I do get a Code on the code reader for them being removed (Not sure How it knows) but never a CEL. |

I think I have my F10 with active shutters but something is wrong with them. Either that the actuator is faulty or the wiring is messed up, suspecting the later to be true as I am aware that it had a front accident in its history. I know that as it is actually throwing a code (cant recall it but you can check it from my posts) but its not showing a CEL nor a check in the idrive system so I hope that helps.

Update:
I took the car to a good mechanic/electrician ans they confirmed that the actuator was actually faulty. They traced the wires from the actuator to the glovebox fusebox and the fuse was fried. They replaced it but soon after it got fried again. They went back to check the actuator of the shutters and it felt hot. So faulty actuator. I don't think BMW sells the actuator seperately as it comes built-in with the air duct but it would be great if someone can confirm that. |
