535I over 100K
Have a 2011 535i, x drive which we love.....HOWEVER it's coming up on 100K (87k now), and it's CPO warranty will expire then. Looking for opinions on whether it's worth keeping over 100K, or will the repair bills start adding up....FAST! Sensors, computer issues, electrical, internal engine issues, etc etc.
I'm very mechanically inclined, and the car is in fabulous shape, etc. Car needs pads, probably rotors, and tires soon.....most of which I can do myself. Thoughts????? |

Since you love the car and can do much of the maintenance yourself, I'd keep it. Parts can be expensive, but so is a car payment (or lost investment opportunity if you pay cash). If it was a 550, I'd suggest dumping it, but F10 535's are pretty reliable, at least according to the Consumer Reports owner surveys.

The 535 in a chassis primarily built for the 550 essentially gives you an over engineered vehicle that is likely to last. |

My 2011 535i has 90,000 miles. The only out of pocket repair was about $1,300 which was the third battery and tranny service. Regular maintenance is at minimal $90 for oil change every 6 months.
I think if you haven't had problems within the last 90,000 miles you'd probably be ok. If it's been a problem car then it would continue being a problem car. I would keep the engine bay clean so you can see if leaks starts to develop. I plan on keeping mine until it starts to breakdown. Good luck. |

If the car is running great, there is no need to change it just because it is almost hitting 100k.

what happen to the good old days when everyone was confident in their BMW's reaching over 200k.
my old E36 and E39 both reached over 160k before I sold them. And they were running great! I still see plenty of older 90's BMW's on the road today. My F10 now has 55k and I plan on running her past 100k. |

It all depends on your finances and tolerance for risk. It's very difficult to give good generic advice. If you keep it, it might just work out great, regular maintenance and few small issues, not cheap, but with 5 series you "pay to play". On the other hand these can get VERY expensive to repair.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, I have no clue what I would (or will do when the time comes) in the same situation, same as you though, I absolutely love the car. Sorry for not helping much . |

i hate to be a downer, but i currently drive a 2011 535xi with 116K miles on it. In the last 15k miles i have put over $8K in my car for the following
New plugs 4 failed coil packs 2 failed fuel injectors 2 axle boots torn 2 oil leaks I also have a check engine light that codes as replace catalytic converter which i refuse to do. i've also replaced 7 tires at $500/tire but thats on me. I am buying a new X5 35d this week actually bc i am done with my car and i believe it is moments away from failure. i hope that a diesel is a bit more reliable at high mileage as i drive over 40k miles/year |

In my opinion if you like the 535 and want to stick with it either trade it in for a new 535 with lower mileage or just keep it over the 100k mark and just make sure you keep up to date with the maintenance.

My F10 is almost 4 yrs old at 36k miles and it barely feels broken in. I tend to keep my cars 8-10 years and my last BMW needed just routine maintenance after its warranty. Its was at 110k miles after 11 years and I sold it to a happy camper who will likely run it another 100k miles. Sounds like you have a good car that doesnt need much, so I'd keep it. The reason I kept last e46 so long is that every time I went to test drive a new bimmer, it felt exactly like my old one (and the e46 is a classic) so I delayed a new car for a long time.
Sure there are more reliable cars out there, but only a BMW will make you smile even after 10 years of ownership. Take care of her and keep her. |

I have I believe 75k warranty (3rd party no deductible) and If they can quote me on giving me another 50k miles or so for a good price, then I'll keep my 550i pass 100k, but if not, ima trade it in. It currently has close to 40k so I still have a good 2 years to go.

Consider that if you buy or lease something new that has a warranty with an arbitrary $500/mo payment, you are looking at a guaranteed $6000/yr in costs. If you own the car outright, I would say hang on to it until it shows signs of failing and looks to be costing you several thousand in repairs each year.
