So the onboard computer on the F10 shows the distance that can be travelled with the remaining fuel as 703kms but the average mileage it shows is 3.9km/l. I do mostly city driving so thats fine…but I don't understand how its showing a range of 700kms! since the fuel tank is only 70litres. Isn't the distance to empty calculated based on the average fuel consumption? Also for the 550i…when the fuel warning light first comes on whats your remaining range to empty on average? Mine came on yesterday and it showed 90kms range remaining…Also I had reset the whole computer recently…could this be the reason for all this and maybe it needs more time to give a more accurate range?

Don't understand how it is giving you the figures you show, but the range/distance remaining is a rolling calculation of the current, not accumulated consumption.

Hence why see can see some very encouraging figures if we fill, say after a light drive on the highway, compared to stop and start ahead off a fill. Long term mpg may not change much, if at all, but the range figure can be changing up or down as we drive.

I never noticed my car reporting km/L, I always thought it showed L/100KM for everything. I'll have to take a second look.

Well…apparently resetting the average consumption doesn't change the reading. My guess is that the 700km to empty is based on a stored average mileage which is of a different value.

Yeah, this can be changed in iDrive, interesting is that your "efficient dynamics" display look changes as a result of this change, battery charge (blue display) moves from right to left.

As for your range, this is what manual states
Range -> Displays the estimated cruising range available with the remaining fuel. It is calculated based on your driving style over the last 20 miles/30 km.

That said, still don't get your 3.9 reading, something seems off there.

Never noticed km/L either, but I have L/100km, and I would expect that to read 10-12l/100km on a 550i, but since yours is saying 703km on 70 liters that is 10l/100km, which is not unreasonable based on BMW's latest engine technology.
City driving will give you higher consumption, I have driven in Singapore and I know what the traffic is like there so on a V8 I would expect a high consumption given your location.

3.9km/l is actually a consumption of 25,6l/100km, that is high for a modern V8, that is what I get on my 25 year old supercharged V12 auto in inner city driving

My M550d usually averages just under 9l/100km, but with very eco oriented (boring) driving I have managed to get it as low as 7.4l/100km, still far from the factory promised 6.4l/100km though.

The fuel warning light comes on when you reach a preset remaining range, 90km sounds reasonable, the manual say it will be sounding when reached, and continuously from 50km remaining range.

Wow, that high, I know the 540i from 15-20 years back used to get that kind of consumption, when my 850i was stock I got a typical mix consumption of 17-18l/100km, and as low as 11l/100km on the highway.

I would have thought these new V8's would have a much better fuel economy than the much older 4.4 V8 from the 90's.

Reading this makes me happy about my little 520d that averaging under 6L/100km.

Even my F11 535i doesn't look so bad... at 8.9/100km over 1,500+ miles, or 8.4/100km over the past 250 miles of mixed driving.

My 530d (US 535d ) is giving me 10.5/100km, however that is pure city commuting driving it pretty hard and spending time stuck in traffic. It will easily give 7/100km on the highway.

Not bad for the performance you get imho...

my 530d average since owning the car is 6.6L/100Kms (42.6 mpg UK)
to be fair its rarely used in heavy traffic and that's weekend driving, mostly on motorways. so better than most I suspect given that.

That's pretty good, but like I said I'm pretty much pedal to the metal in my driving style! Can get a lot better if I could be bothered to be more patient and more controlled in the the way I drive

Let me clarify. On the highway Driving at 120 km hr I can drive over 700kms on a tank. But currently I'm in sport+ all the time and 90% city driving so my fuel consumption has taken a nose dive.

My M550D usually get around 8-9l/100km, depending on my driving style.
Spirited driving will put me close to 10l/100km, eco oriented driving will get me down to 7l/100km, BMW claim 6.3l/100km, but I doubt I will ever see that.

Back to OP's issue. as we are comparing completely different things here, a 4 or 6 cylinder engine will not come close to a V8.
The 700km is the range the car defaults to when the tank is full, my car default to 800km, but this number changes as the tank is drained and uses a calculation based on driving style on the remaining range.
A V8 will have terrible fuel consumption in city driving.
I myself have spent some time on the AYE and CTE from Keppel and PPL shipyard to Clarke quay and a V8 there from 5-8pm would get terrible consumption, above 20l/100km would not surprise me at all.

In reality I don't suppose many users will be taking much notice of the finer nuances of the 'range' function. Perhaps on a fill up, but most likely when we get the 'bong' we give it attention, as we may need to be on the look out for fuel.

But some of us with idle moments while driving, may be watching how much it changes, say from a cold start, how many miles it takes to recover to the expected readings for miles covered. How it gains miles, often quite quickly, once we get into steady speed driving.

An example is when I go into town, 12 miles dropping in altitude down the glen. I can gain a few extra miles on the range readout, even on the 12 mile trip. Coming back home typically gets back to where I'd expect it to be, a drop of ~24 miles. With long term mpg average staying the same.

Since I have all the information I need in the HUD and on the iDrive screen, I keep the L/100km display up under my speedometer, so I am constantly reminded of my consumption.
I will admit there is a psychological effect when the consumption goes above 9l/100km making me drive more economical
When I get my consumption down close to 7l/100km I get this satisfaction of driving very economical on one hand, but on the other I am very bored and not having that much fun driving.
