Same here at 28. At 19 I would pick the M3.

Tough call- M3 driven by a young guy kinda screams brat or a**hole. Especially in LA where I live. The 5 series doesn't really have that stigma and as others have said it can be tweaked gently to make it fierce or in the case of the 550- a beast.

You didn't mention your size but the 3 series with the seat renders the rear drivers side seat basically useless. I am about 6'4 and in my 5 with the seat comfortable my 8 year old has trouble getting in and out.

Also you didn't mention your driving style or what you plan on doing with it.

Love my 550 with exhaust and Dinan 2. Need to find time to get ACS springs installed and Stage 3. That said as it stands its a beast.

Since you're young, M3 coupe- no question! You have plenty of time later in your life for boring ol' sedans.

If you can afford a sports car when you're young, go for it and don't look back!

My only comment is try not to move too quickly up the car ladder - otherwise, going back down is not that great. I started with a 3 series when I was 17 and bought myself a new 911 (dotcom bubble) when I was 22. Since then I've gone through a range of Porsches and M cars... Now that I'm in Asia, cars are 3x the price, I'm older (age 31), and I'm driving around in a 130k usd 528i - which definitely hurts, but I've gotten the sports car mindset already out of the way.

So with that said, live it up while you're young (within means) and try to leave some room to look forward to when buying new cars in the future.

If the means allows for it go with the M3. A 550 is a long ways out for you unless you prefer a huge luxury cruise liner type over a sports car. Its like do you prefer a night with Kate Upton (M3) or Naomi Watts (550)? Both are gorgeous but i'm sure you will have a completely different experience with either of them

I don't see how M3 is going to be any better than a F10 in terms of feeling misplaced... Shows that you live in L.A. area, people are used to seeing young people with nice cars, so there is no need to worry about that at all. The most important thing is to get whatever makes you happy. If you want a fun car, nothing is going to beat the M3 (even the m5 in my opinion...) but if you want something more roomy while still have enough power underneath your hood, get a tuned 550. Do keep in mind that the new generation M3 is coming out soon though.
